The Eastern Conference Play-In Tournament tips off on Tuesday night with a fascinating clash of styles, as the No. 10 seed Miami Heat travel to the Spectrum Center to take on the No. 9 seed Charlotte Hornets. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM ET in what is a true win-or-go-home scenario, with the winner advancing for a chance at the final playoff spot later in the week.

Charlotte represents one of the league’s most exciting young teams, fueled by pace, shot-making and confidence. Miami, meanwhile, is the battle-tested postseason regular, comfortable in these high-pressure environments and led by one of the best coaches in the sport. Pick #1: Miami Heat +5.5 over Charlotte Hornets (-110)

PICK #1: Heat +5.5 over Hornets (-110)

On paper, Charlotte has been the better team, especially in the second half of the season. They’re more explosive offensively, deeper and have home-court advantage. But that’s why we play these postseason basketball games.

Miami thrives in this environment. This is a franchise that has made a habit of outperforming expectations in the postseason, and they’re led by veterans who have been through these exact moments before. Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo have NBA Finals experience, and the roster is filled with players who understand how to execute in tight, half-court settings.

Charlotte, on the other hand, is stepping into unfamiliar territory. Outside of a couple of players with minimal postseason reps, this core hasn’t experienced the intensity of a game like this. 

The Heat also took three of four meetings in the regular season, proving they can handle this matchup. Add in Erik Spoelstra’s tactical edge, and it’s hard not to like Miami keeping this within one or two possessions, if not winning outright.

PICK #2: Under 227 (-110)

Miami just scored 140+ points in back-to-back games to close the regular season, but those were end-of-season games with far less defensive intensity.

Play-In games are more physical and often dictated by nerves early on. Charlotte prefers to play fast, but Miami is one of the best teams in the league at controlling tempo and dragging opponents into a half-court battle.

The Heat will likely lean on Bam Adebayo defensively to protect the paint and force Charlotte into contested jumpers, while offensively, they’ll use the clock and prioritize efficient possessions over pace.

Both teams rank toward the bottom in getting to the line and excel at defending without fouling. That limits easy points and keeps the clock moving. With an inexperienced team on one side and a methodical, defensive-minded team on the other, 227 feels a few points too high for a game of this magnitude.

PICK #3: Kon Knueppel Over 3.5 Threes Made (+115)

If Charlotte is going to win this game, it will likely come from beyond the arc, and Kon Knueppel is their most dangerous weapon in that regard.

The rookie has been nothing short of sensational from deep, shooting over 40% on high volume and setting records along the way. More importantly, he has consistently delivered in this matchup. Against Miami this season, Knueppel knocked down 18 threes across four games, hitting five or more in three of those contests.

Miami’s defensive scheme prioritizes protecting the paint and limiting easy looks at the rim, often conceding perimeter attempts as a trade-off. In a game where possessions will be at a premium, Charlotte will need shot-making to break through Miami’s defense. Expect plenty of looks for Knueppel’s off-ball movement and drive-and-kick action. At plus money, backing him to hit four or more threes is a strong value play.
