Vegas (10-5-2) visits Detroit (7-6-3) at Little Caesars Arena, with puck drop at 7:00 PM ET. The Golden Knights won 3-2 in Pittsburgh their last time out when Tomas Hertl scored his second goal of the night with 32 seconds left. Detroit lost 4-2 in Tampa Bay, and John Gibson left that game hurt. Daniil Tarasov finished it and is expected to start tonight, with Michal Postava recalled under emergency conditions to back him up. Gibson is day-to-day. Detroit is also without Dylan Larkin, whom the team suspended after he told it he no longer wanted to play in Detroit.

Vegas is the -144 favorite with Detroit at +120, but the market still expects Detroit to score. The total is 5.5 with the Over at -133, and Detroit's own team total Over 2.5 is priced at -145. The special teams numbers point the same way. Vegas kills only 73.9% of its penalties, and Detroit's power play converts 23.6% of the time. Without Larkin, Detroit's first power-play unit carries most of its offense, and both of our picks come from that unit. Vegas hasn't named its starter. Adin Hill played in Pittsburgh, and he and Carter Hart have split the starts this season.

Golden Knights vs. Red Wings Predictions

  • Pick #1: Emmitt Finnie Over 0.5 Points (-115)
  • Pick #2: Moritz Seider Over 1.5 Shots on Goal (-155)

PICK #1: Emmitt Finnie Over 0.5 Points (-115)

Finnie centers Detroit's top line between Alex DeBrincat and Viktor Arvidsson, and he plays the middle of the first power-play unit with Arvidsson, Lucas Raymond, DeBrincat and Seider. He has 11 points (seven goals, four assists) in 16 games, with a point in 9 of them and in 7 of his last 10. The -115 price implies 53.5%.

Tampa Bay held him off the sheet, but he'd had a point in four straight games before that. He's played close to 20 minutes a night over his last five games and has points in 8 of his last 11.

What beats this is Vegas's defense, which allows 2.88 goals a game, seventh-fewest in the league. The way through it is the power play: if Detroit draws a couple of penalties, its top center will be on the ice for them. These lines are projected from Detroit's last game. If Finnie is moved off the top line or the first unit, this pick comes off.

PICK #2: Moritz Seider Over 1.5 Shots on Goal (-155)

Seider plays on the top pair with Ben Chiarot and runs the first power play from the point. He's played at least 22 minutes in every game, including 30:11 in Tampa Bay. He has 30 shots in 16 games, with two or more in 11 of them and in 7 of his last 10.

At -155 he has to clear the line 60.8% of the time, and this season's sample is too short to prove that alone. Last season he had two or more shots in 55 of 82 games, or 67.1%.

Detroit is the home underdog, so it should spend stretches of this game chasing, and that sends more pucks to the defenseman who plays close to half the game. The risk is Vegas's shot suppression. The Golden Knights allow 25.6 shots a game, and Seider managed only one shot in two of his last four games.
