Odds as of Oct 15, 7:50 AM ET

Philadelphia is 0-5-3, the worst start in franchise history, and the offense sits at the center of it. The Flyers have scored 10 goals in eight games, 1.25 a game and last in the NHL, and they have not reached three in any of them. They take the fewest shots in the league (20.8 a game), allow the most (34.6), and are playing without Travis Konecny, who is on injured reserve. Detroit is 1-3-2 after three straight losses, the latest a 5-4 overtime defeat to New Jersey on Tuesday, but the Red Wings put 31.8 shots a game on net, third in the league. The puck drops at 7:30 PM ET at Little Caesars Arena, streaming on ESPN+, Hulu and Disney+.

Detroit opened -120 and is now -140, with Philadelphia drifting from -100 to +117. Both teams played Tuesday, so neither is on a back-to-back. We're betting on the Flyers staying quiet and Detroit winning, and both picks below cash in that game.

Flyers vs. Red Wings Predictions

  • Pick #1: Detroit Red Wings Moneyline (-140)
  • Pick #2: Christian Dvorak Under 1.5 Shots on Goal (+100)

PICK #1: Detroit Red Wings Moneyline (-140)

Look at Philadelphia's goal column: 0, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2. The power play is converting 8.3%, tied for last in the league, and the defense gives up nearly four goals a game. Detroit's own scoring is thin at 2.33 a game (28th), but the Red Wings get pucks to the net, and nobody has allowed more shots than Philadelphia.

Daniil Tarasov gets the start in goal. He stopped all 30 shots over 65 minutes in Montreal on Oct. 10, a game Detroit lost 1-0 in a shootout, and gave up one goal on nine shots in relief against Seattle the night before. That works out to a .974 save percentage and a 0.66 goals-against average, though two appearances is a small number. Philadelphia hasn't named its goalie. Dan Vladar played all 65 minutes Tuesday and stopped 29 of 31, but he is 0-3-1 with an .875 save percentage on the season. Joseph Woll has been sharper (0-2-2, .914, 2.95), so a Woll start makes the Flyers a bit harder to beat without fixing their scoring problem.

The -140 price implies 58.3%. The worry is Detroit at home, where it is 1-3-1 and has allowed six to Seattle and five to New Jersey in its last two games. The Flyers also found something late Tuesday, scoring twice in 73 seconds in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit before losing 3-2 to Seattle in a shootout. If this one slips away, it's because a Philadelphia goalie stole it. We'll back a team that hasn't scored three goals in a game all season to come up short again.

PICK #2: Christian Dvorak Under 1.5 Shots on Goal (+100)

Dvorak has 9 shots in eight games and has finished at one or fewer in six of them (1, 3, 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 2). Ice time isn't the issue. He centers the top line, plays on the first power-play unit and has logged more than 17 minutes in each of his last three games, including 18:35 with 2:13 on the power play Tuesday. The issue is the team around him, which is getting 20.8 shots a game after averaging 25.5 last season.

The Over is the favored side for a fair reason: Dvorak averaged 1.9 shots a game over 80 games last season, and if he gets back to that rate, this Under loses. Scale last season's rate down to this team's shot volume and he projects around one and a half shots, which puts an even-money Under (50% implied) on the right side of the number.

He did put three on net against Carolina on Oct. 11, and the danger is a night when Philadelphia falls behind early and fires everything at Tarasov. A Flyers team chasing the game is also one that is losing it, which suits the moneyline.
