Duke vs. Virginia Prediction, CFB Week 8 Odds & Best Bets (10/23)

Fact checked at 10:04 AM ET, Oct 23, 2026
Odds as of Oct 23, 10:02 AM ET
Duke and Virginia meet for the third time in less than a year. Virginia won 34-17 in Durham last November, Duke took the ACC title game 27-20 in overtime three weeks later, and both games stayed under their totals. Kickoff is Friday at 7:00 PM ET at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville.
Duke (4-2, 1-2 ACC) has lost two straight after leading in the fourth quarter both times. Georgia Tech scored with 54 seconds left to win 28-25, and North Carolina scored with 1:53 to go to win 24-20. Virginia (4-3, 2-2) lost 23-13 at SMU and has scored 7, 28 and 13 points in its last three games, with Beau Pribula completing 38 of 73 passes for 418 yards over that stretch.
Virginia was a 6.5-point favorite in the early lines on Oct. 11, before the SMU loss. It's a 2.5-point favorite for Friday, and the total has dropped from 53.5 to 46.5. Thursday night's ACC availability report lists 20 Virginia players out and four doubtful. Receivers Rico Flores Jr. (long-term knee), Dillon Newton-Short and Triston Ward are out, and Kameron Courtney and Dylan Cope are doubtful. In the secondary, Ethan Minter and Corey Costner are out and Brandyn Hillman is doubtful. Duke has its own list: center Matt Craycraft misses a second straight game, three other offensive linemen are out, defensive backs Andrew Pellicciotta and Evan Smith are out, and safety DaShawn Stone is questionable. The forecast is clear, in the 50s at kickoff, with almost no wind.
Our read: Duke wins a close, low-scoring game. Nate Sheppard gets his yards against a run defense that has allowed a 100-yard rusher three weeks running, and Virginia's thinned-out passing game can't keep pace. Both picks cash in that game.
Duke vs. Virginia Predictions
- Pick #1: Duke Moneyline (+120)
- Pick #2: Under 46.5 (-102)
PICK #1: Duke Moneyline (+120)
Start with Virginia's run defense. Florida State's Ashton Daniels ran for 136 yards against it, Syracuse's Tylik Hill for 118 and SMU's Kendrick Raphael for 119. Sheppard is next. He leads FBS in all-purpose yards per game (179.8), opened the season with 227 rushing yards against Tulane and caught 11 passes against North Carolina. Duke has allowed only two sacks all season.
No FBS opponent has scored more than 28 on Duke's defense, and Tulane and Stanford managed 3 and 7. Virginia's offense is in worse shape. Pribula has completed 52.1% of his passes over the last three games, and Flores and Courtney won't be there to help. Virginia's offensive coordinator has said the Cavaliers aren't "going to throw it 40 times a game."
The 45 computer models tracked for this game average Virginia by less than half a point, and one public matchup predictor gives Virginia a 50.6% chance. Call it a coin flip. At +120 Duke only has to win 45.5% of the time.
Duke has lost two straight in the final two minutes, and it plays on the road with four offensive linemen out and Pellicciotta and Smith missing from the secondary. Pribula has 13 touchdown passes and one interception this season. Seventy percent of the moneyline money is on Virginia.
PICK #2: Under 46.5 (-102)
These teams have played 11 games against FBS opponents this season, and seven finished under 46.5: three of Duke's five and four of Virginia's six. Virginia's last three totaled 45, 53 and 36 points, and its offense gained 205, 282 and 258 yards in them. Duke's 24-20 loss to North Carolina stayed under a 46.5 closing total, and its 17-3 win over Tulane added up to 20.
Virginia is short of people to throw to. Flores, Newton-Short and Ward are out, Courtney and Cope are doubtful, and tight end Dakota Twitty has seven catches all season. Duke would rather run Sheppard, which keeps the clock moving. Last season's two meetings totaled 51 and 47 points, well under closing totals of 60 and 58.5.
At -102 the Under needs to hit 50.5% of the time. The weather won't get in the way: clear, in the 50s, light wind.
The public is on the other side, with 75% of the bets and 76% of the money on the Over. Both secondaries are banged up, Duke without Pellicciotta and Smith and Virginia without Minter and Costner, and Duke's 31-27 win at Illinois shows it can get into a shootout. A 24-20 Duke win still stays under.
