The best offense on the field meets the worst scoring defense in the league. San Francisco is 5-0 and averaging 30.8 points a game, third in the NFL, while Washington is 1-3-1 and giving up 29.8, more than anyone. The 49ers are 3-0 at Levi's Stadium with wins over Miami, Arizona and Denver, and they also beat the Rams in Melbourne and won at Seattle last week, 32-29. Washington has allowed 37 at Dallas, 31 to Seattle and 30 to Indianapolis, and it comes west off a 27-27 overtime tie with the Giants. We expect San Francisco to put up a big number, Washington to score enough to get the total over, and the 49ers to win by more than a touchdown.

Washington is without running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt, its leading rusher, who was ruled out with a groin injury. Dan Quinn said the Commanders will lean on "some combination" of Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler. Jayden Daniels, back from the dislocated elbow that cost him Weeks 3 and 4, practiced fully all week and carries no game status. Brock Purdy has started all five games and is not on San Francisco's report. The 49ers have ruled out receiver Deebo Samuel (hamstring) and edge rusher Nick Bosa, and receiver Mike Evans (ribs, Achilles) is questionable after missing every practice.

San Francisco opened -5.5 on Oct 6 and is up to -7.5, and the total has climbed from 50.5 to 52.5. In that stretch Washington managed only a home tie with the Giants and then lost Croskey-Merritt, though no single report explains the move. Both teams last played Oct 11. Kickoff is Monday at 8:15 PM ET at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, on ESPN and ABC, and the forecast is dry, in the low 60s with light wind. Picture something like 34-20: all three picks cash, and all three lean on the 49ers' offense.

Commanders vs. 49ers Predictions

  • Pick #1: 49ers -7.5 (-108)
  • Pick #2: George Kittle Over 65.5 Receiving Yards (-113)
  • Pick #3: Over 52.5 (-106)

PICK #1: 49ers -7.5 (-108)

These teams are further apart than a touchdown. San Francisco scores 30.8 a game and allows 18.6, fourth-fewest in the league. Washington allows 29.8, last in the league, and now has to run the ball without its leading rusher. The 49ers have won by 20, 22, 6, 10 and 3, which clears 7.5 three times in five tries.

The computers see a bigger gap than the market does. The 45 models tracked by The Prediction Tracker average San Francisco by 12.5, and 38 of them have the 49ers winning by more than 7.5. You're paying -108, a 51.9% break-even.

The number itself is the danger. A seven-point win loses, and the last two 49ers wins came by 10 against Denver and 3 at Seattle. Daniels also makes Washington a different team: in his return against the Giants he ran for 103 yards and Washington scored 27. Bosa's absence isn't new, though. He hasn't played since Week 2, so San Francisco's defensive numbers since then already account for it.

PICK #2: George Kittle Over 65.5 Receiving Yards (-113)

Washington has been carved up by tight ends, and Kittle is back to a full workload. The lead tight end against this defense has gone for 77 yards (Dallas Goedert), 43, 69 (AJ Barner), 41 and 94 (Isaiah Likely), and tight ends have caught seven touchdowns against it. Washington gives up 268.8 passing yards a game, among the most in the league.

Kittle played 46% and 48% of the snaps in the first two weeks, then 85%, 91% and 92% since, with 82 yards against Arizona, 70 against Denver and 24 at Seattle. Even in that limited Week 2 role he caught four passes for 80 yards against Miami. The receiver room is thin, too: Samuel, who played 43% of the snaps at Seattle, is out, and Evans hasn't practiced. At -113 the bet needs to land 53.1% of the time.

Seattle is the warning. He was on the field for 92% of the snaps and finished with 24 yards on five catches. If Evans plays, he'll take his share of targets, and a big lead could turn the second half over to Christian McCaffrey and the run game.

PICK #3: Over 52.5 (-106)

Washington's games have turned into shootouts lately. Three of its last four reached at least 54 points (57 at Dallas, 64 against Seattle, 54 against the Giants), and two of San Francisco's last three hit 61 or more (66 against Arizona, 61 at Seattle). The total opened 50.5 and has been pushed to 52.5, with 60% of the money on the Over from 46% of the bets. A 34-20 finish gets there, and so does 31-24.

At -106, the break-even is 51.5%. The risk is San Francisco's defense, which allows just 18.6 a game, and both offenses are down a starter: Croskey-Merritt for Washington, Samuel for San Francisco. A grinding 24-13 win would cover the spread and still miss this number, so Washington has to hold up its end.
