Odds as of Oct 2, 10:00 AM ET

The defending Stanley Cup champions have not scored yet. Carolina raised its banner on Tuesday, then lost 1-0 in overtime to Florida with 15 shots on net across nearly 65 minutes. Washington, which missed the playoffs last season, opens on Friday with a newcomer on three of its four forward lines (Alex Tuch, Jordan Kyrou and Boone Jenner). Alex Ovechkin, who sat out all four preseason games with a lower-body injury, is expected to play.

The consensus moneyline is Carolina -143 and Washington +119, barely off the opener of Carolina -141. The total is 6.5, with the Under at -127 and the Over at +106. That Under opened at -141, so the price has drifted toward the Over while the number itself has stayed put. Carolina -1.5 is +173.

Logan Thompson is Washington's listed starter. Carolina's expected starter is Pyotr Kochetkov, who took the starter's net at Thursday's practice. Seth Jarvis (shoulder surgery) is still out for Carolina, and Rasmus Sandin (knee surgery) is out for Washington. Puck drop is 7 p.m. ET on Friday at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, on Hurricanes Hockey Network and MNMT. Both teams play again on Saturday.

Washington Capitals vs. Carolina Hurricanes Predictions

  • Pick #1: Under 6.5 (-127)
  • Pick #2: Washington Capitals Team Total Under 3 (-108)
  • Pick #3: Carolina Hurricanes Moneyline (-143)

PICK #1: Under 6.5 (-127)

Carolina allowed 240 goals in 82 games last season, tied for fourth fewest in the league, and got there by giving up 23.9 shots a game. Five of the six defensemen who dressed on Tuesday played in last spring's playoffs. Florida managed 20 shots in a game that ran to the final seconds of overtime, Carolina killed all seven penalties, and the two power plays went a combined 0-for-13. Add Thompson, who had a 2.44 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage in 58 games last season, and you have the shape of this bet: two of last season's stingier teams, a proven goalie and two attacks that are not yet in rhythm, which points to six goals or fewer.

The attacks are the part I like most. Carolina has no goals yet and is without Jarvis, who scored 32 in 71 games last season. Ovechkin's line with Dylan Strome and Ryan Leonard never played a preseason game together, and Ovechkin said this week that "maybe it's going to be hard the first couple of games." The consensus price is -127 as of 10:00 a.m. ET, which prices the Under at 55.9%, and overtime and a shootout count toward the total. The dollars lean the same way, if only a little: 62% of the dollars bet on the total are on the Under, against 50% of the bets.

What scares me is Carolina's own offense, which scored 296 goals last season, second most in the league, and one quiet night does not erase that. Kochetkov played only nine games last season because of lower-body injuries, including hip surgery, and had an .899 save percentage in them. Alexander Nikishin, who played 81 games on that defense last season, is away from the team as an unsigned restricted free agent who has asked for a trade. Washington added two wingers with three 30-goal seasons each in Tuch and Kyrou. And the Under was -141 when it opened, so the market has leaned toward the Over since. If you trust Carolina's defense more than you doubt its offense, Pick #2 is the narrower way to play the same idea.

PICK #2: Washington Capitals Team Total Under 3 (-108)

The consensus price is -108 as of 10:00 a.m. ET, and exactly three Washington goals returns the stake. Overtime counts, and a shootout win adds one goal. The price implies 51.9%, so this isn't a bargain, but the push on three takes some of the sting out. The bet itself is that Carolina's defense holds Washington, whose forward lines have not played a real game together, to two goals or fewer.

Washington scored 263 goals last season, 15th in the league, and the group that did it has been reshuffled. Three of the four lines and two of the three defense pairs include a player who was not on the team a year ago. The dress rehearsal with the regulars, a 3-2 overtime win over Boston a week ago, produced one 5-on-5 goal among the game's five.

Carolina is a hard first opponent for a team in that spot. It allowed those 23.9 shots a game last season, held Florida to 20 on Tuesday and has already played at regular-season pace. Washington coach Spencer Carbery said Carolina takes away time and space as well as any team in the league, and that "they've got a game under their belt." Ovechkin, the finisher most likely to beat a tight defense, has not played a game of any kind since last season.

The talent Washington brought in is what gives me pause. Tuch and Kyrou give the second power-play unit two proven scorers, Pierre-Luc Dubois is healthy after playing 29 games last season, and a power play that converted 17.8% a year ago went 3-for-3 in the Boston game. Ovechkin, Dubois, Strome, Tom Wilson and Jakob Chychrun are the expected first unit. If Kochetkov starts, it would be his first start of the season. Washington also scored four in Raleigh last November, with Frederik Andersen starting for Carolina. The line has moved as well: Washington's team total was 2.5 (Under +105) at 8 a.m. and is 3 now. A three-goal night is a push rather than a loss, but the Over is the favored side at -125. This pick and the Under both lean on Carolina's defense. A Washington outburst beats both, while a 4-3 Carolina win loses the Under and pushes here.

PICK #3: Carolina Hurricanes Moneyline (-143)

Carolina has had two days off since the Florida game. Washington's regulars have not played in a week, and both teams start a back-to-back tonight. Carbery called that combination, against this opponent, a possible "recipe for just not a good situation" if his team overcomplicates its game. The champion, at home and with a game already played, gets a visitor still learning its own lines. The bet wins in regulation, overtime or a shootout.

Carolina went 53-22-7 last season, scored 296 goals (second most) and allowed 240 (tied for fourth fewest). Washington went 43-30-9 and missed the playoffs. Seventeen players from Carolina's Cup-clinching lineup dressed on Tuesday, so last season's numbers still describe most of this team. Washington's describe less of it. John Carlson and Trevor van Riemsdyk are gone from the defense, Sandin is out, and two of the three pairs are new.

Goaltending is Washington's side of the matchup. Thompson's .912 last season goes up against Kochetkov's nine games and .899, and Brandon Bussi, who stopped 19 of 20 on Tuesday, is in line for Saturday instead. Carolina did not score against Florida, went 0-for-6 on the power play and is still without Jarvis. The betting public is heavily on Carolina, with 82% of the moneyline bets, yet only 50% of the money, so the larger bets have leaned to Washington. Washington also took two of the three meetings last season, none of them started by Kochetkov. Every price change since 8 a.m. has gone Washington's way: Carolina was -150, and its team total Over 3.5 went from -100 to +105. The consensus price is -143 as of 10:00 a.m. ET, which converts to 58.8%, and that is a fair amount to ask of a team that has not scored yet. Carolina -1.5 (+173) is the alternative for bettors who expect a margin. A 3-1 or 3-2 Carolina win cashes all three picks, and all three lose ground if Washington's new lines click on the first night.
