Odds as of Oct 13, 5:34 AM ET

The Boston Bruins (4-2-0) open a four-game road trip at the San Jose Sharks (3-2-0) on Tuesday, with the puck dropping at 11:00 PM ET at SAP Center on ESPN and NESN. Both moneylines sit at -110 after San Jose opened as a -120 home favorite on Sunday, and the total is 6.5. San Jose's team total is set at three goals, so the market already expects a modest night from the Sharks. We think they come in under even that.

San Jose can't score. The Sharks have 13 goals in five games, 2.6 a night and tied for 23rd in the league, including three regulation-time goals over their last three games and seven 5-on-5 goals all season. They rank last in high-danger chances (22) and 32nd in expected-goals share (30.4) through five games, two of which Macklin Celebrini missed. The power play is 2-for-13 on the season and 0-for-7 over the last three games. All three wins came in overtime, and they are still looking for their first regulation win. Boston, meanwhile, has allowed 13 goals in six games, 2.17 a night and fifth-fewest in the league, with only seven of those at 5-on-5, and its goalies have a combined .920 save percentage.

Jeremy Swayman (4-1-0, 1.79 goals-against average, .932) is projected to start for Boston and Yaroslav Askarov (2-2-0, 3.71, .860) for San Jose. Neither is confirmed, and if Michael DiPietro gets the net for Boston, both picks below lose some footing. Both teams last played Saturday, so nobody is on a back-to-back. Barclay Goodrow is questionable for San Jose with an illness.

Bruins vs. Sharks Predictions

  • Pick #1: Mason Marchment Under 0.5 Points (-150)
  • Pick #2: Luca Cagnoni Under 0.5 Points (-155)

PICK #1: Mason Marchment Under 0.5 Points (-150)

Marchment has lost his seat next to Celebrini. San Jose bumped Igor Chernyshov up to the top line in his place during the third period of Saturday's 3-1 loss to Edmonton and kept it that way at Monday's practice, where two separate Sharks reports had Chernyshov skating with Celebrini and Will Smith. Marchment slid down to a line with Alexander Wennberg and Tyler Toffoli and to the second power-play unit.

He scored in the Oct 1 opener and hasn't had a point in four games since, playing 16:12 to 18:07 a night in that stretch. Those were already middle-six minutes, so the demotion may not change his ice time much. What it changes is his linemates: he no longer gets Celebrini's passes. At -150 you're paying for a 60.0% chance, which we think undersells a third-line winger facing a team that allows 2.17 goals a game.

A San Jose breakout beats it. The Sharks are 3-0 when they reach three goals, and a second-unit winger can still bang in a rebound or pick up a secondary assist. If Marchment is back with Celebrini when the lines come out before the game, the case gets thinner.

PICK #2: Luca Cagnoni Under 0.5 Points (-155)

Cagnoni goes second because his role is busier. He plays on the third pair with Dmitry Orlov, he's one of five on the first power-play unit alongside Celebrini, Smith, Wennberg and Ivar Stenberg, and his ice time has ranged from 16:06 to 21:21.

He hasn't turned that into points since opening night, when he had a goal and an assist (one of them on the power play). Four straight blank games have followed. The power play that should feed him is 0-for-7 over three games, and Monday's practice reshuffled the top unit, with Stenberg in for Chernyshov. Boston's penalty kill is middle of the pack at 81.0%, 16th in the league, so one power-play point is a real way to lose. We're betting San Jose doesn't create enough for him to get there; a team that ranks last in high-danger chances and expected-goals share leaves a defenseman very little to collect. -155 is the steeper of the two prices and implies 60.8%.

These two picks are really one bet on the same game: Swayman and the Boston defense holding the Sharks to a goal or two. A San Jose scoring night sinks both, and a parade of Boston penalties hurts Cagnoni most.
