St. Louis arrives in St. Paul with a three-game point streak and 12 goals in its last two games, capped by a 7-2 rout at Ottawa on Tuesday in which Pius Suter, Mason McTavish and Jake Neighbours scored twice apiece. The Blues are 3-2-1 and average 3.5 goals a game. Minnesota is 4-2-1, unbeaten in two home games, and lost 5-2 at Winnipeg on Tuesday with Calvin Pickard in goal. The Wild's 2.29 goals allowed per game is tied for third-fewest in the league, but they give up 26.9 shots a night, exactly the league average, and that tidy number owes a lot to Jesper Wallstedt's .933 save percentage over six starts. The blue line in front of him is short. Brock Faber is out indefinitely with a fractured skull suffered in the preseason, and Jared Spurgeon (upper body) was a late scratch Tuesday and is day to day.

The market has moved toward goals and toward St. Louis. Minnesota opened -182 and is down to -148, with 71% of the money on the Blues against 28% of the bets. The total sits at 5.5 with the Over at -135, up from -125, and 70% of the tickets are on the Over. Minnesota's power play leads the league at 7-for-19, while St. Louis has killed 17 of 19. Puck drop is 8:00 PM ET at Grand Casino Arena, with Joel Hofer and Wallstedt expected in goal.

We expect goals at both ends, so we're backing each team's best playmaker to get on the scoresheet. Both picks need offense, and a 2-1 game is the result that hurts them together.

Blues vs. Wild Predictions

  • Pick #1: Quinn Hughes Over 0.5 Assists (-150)
  • Pick #2: Robert Thomas Over 0.5 Points (-150)

PICK #1: Quinn Hughes Over 0.5 Assists (-150)

Hughes is seven for seven. He has an assist in every Minnesota game this season, eight in all, plus two goals. He runs the first unit on the league's best power play and has a power-play point in four of the seven games, and when Spurgeon sat out in Winnipeg he logged more than 28 minutes. The streak has a long history behind it. After Minnesota acquired him last season, he had an assist in 32 of his 48 regular-season games with the Wild, 66.7%. The -150 price works out to 60.0%, and his track record here clears it.

The danger is the Blues' defense. They allow 25 shots a game, among the fewest in the league, Hofer is stopping 92% of what he sees, and a penalty kill that has gone 17-for-19 could keep Hughes's best avenue closed.

PICK #2: Robert Thomas Over 0.5 Points (-150)

Thomas scored 64 points in 64 games last season and reached the scoresheet in 42 of them, a 65.6% clip. His start has been quiet: two assists and no goals on six shots through six games, and the top line accounted for only two of the Blues' 12 goals in the last two wins. Minnesota is a good opponent to break out against. He has a point in five of his last six games against the Wild (two goals, five assists, matching the seven points the Blues' own preview cites), and he faces a defense missing Faber and possibly Spurgeon. Tuesday's lines had him centering Dylan Holloway and Jimmy Snuggerud and on the first power-play unit.

Odds of -150 carry a 60.0% break-even, under his full-season rate. If the slow start is real and Wallstedt keeps stopping 93% of the shots he faces, this one loses.
