The Chicago Blackhawks (4-8-0, 0-4-0 on the road) visit the Detroit Red Wings (5-4-3) at Little Caesars Arena, with the puck dropping at 7:30 PM ET. Chicago ended a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 home win over Los Angeles in its last game. Detroit comes home from a four-game trip through Seattle, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton that finished with a 4-3 shootout win in Edmonton, in Michal Postava's first NHL start. Detroit is the -180 favorite.

We expect a low-scoring game because Chicago can't create much. The Blackhawks average 21.8 shots and 2.17 goals per game, 31st in the NHL in both, and Detroit allows 25.7 shots per game, ninth-fewest. That points to the Under and to Anton Frondell staying under his shots line. Both picks need the same thing: a quiet Chicago attack.

Spencer Knight (Chicago) and John Gibson (Detroit) are projected in goal, not confirmed. Dylan Larkin missed Detroit's last practice for what coach Todd McLellan called a maintenance day, and he is expected to play. Detroit is without Marco Kasper, Mason Appleton and Simon Edvinsson, and Chicago's Bowen Byram is day-to-day.

Blackhawks vs. Red Wings Predictions

  • Pick #1: Under 5.5 (+116)
  • Pick #2: Anton Frondell Under 1.5 Shots on Goal (+100)

PICK #1: Under 5.5 (+116)

Chicago's offense is the case here. The Blackhawks score 2.17 goals per game, 31st of 32, on 21.8 shots per game, also 31st, and Detroit gives up the ninth-fewest shots in the league. Four of Chicago's last five games ended with five goals or fewer, including the 2-1 win over Los Angeles in which Knight stopped 25 of 26 shots. Detroit averages under three goals a game itself.

The total opened at 6.5 and has dropped a full goal to 5.5, and the Under still pays plus money. That +116 implies a 46.3% chance. Larkin's missed practice was a maintenance day, so the lower number doesn't depend on him sitting out.

Chicago's defense is what could sink it. The Blackhawks allow 3.67 goals per game, 30th in the league, so Detroit could get most of the way to six by itself. Four of Detroit's last five games went over their totals, though three of those were 4-3 shootout finishes. Both goalies are only projected, and a change in either net changes this bet. The total includes overtime; how a shootout counts depends on your book's rules.

PICK #2: Anton Frondell Under 1.5 Shots on Goal (+100)

Frondell has one shot or fewer in 8 of his 12 games this season, with 20 shots in all. At even money, the implied probability is 50.0%. Twelve games is a small sample, so weigh it that way.

His spot in the lineup fits the number. In Chicago's last game he centered the third line between Tyler Bertuzzi and Ryan Donato and played on the second power-play unit, and he finished with one shot in 15:32 against Los Angeles. Detroit doesn't give up many shots to begin with.

The other side has a case. The Over is the favorite at -135, and Frondell has had four shots against Winnipeg and three each against the Islanders and Utah. In his 12 games at the end of last season, he had two or more shots eight times. A move up the lineup would hurt this bet, so check Chicago's lines before puck drop. Player props may settle differently in overtime at different books.
