Philadelphia can't score, and the list of forwards who might help keeps getting shorter. The Flyers are 1-6-3 with 14 goals in 10 games, 1.4 a game and the fewest in the league. Saturday's 3-1 win over Ottawa ended a nine-game winless run, and it was the only night all season they reached three goals. Travis Konecny is on injured reserve. Tyson Foerster and Sean Couturier are game-time decisions after neither practiced Sunday, and Owen Tippett, who sat out Saturday with an upper-body injury, missed Sunday's practice too. Two defensemen, Rasmus Ristolainen and Cam York, are also on injured reserve.

Colorado comes in at 5-2-1, scoring 4.5 goals a game, second in the league, and the market makes the Avalanche a clear favorite at -225 with the total at 6.5. They are on the first night of a back-to-back that finishes Tuesday in New Jersey, and Nicolas Roy, Zachary L'Heureux and Logan O'Connor stayed home in Denver. Mackenzie Blackwood and Dan Vladar are the projected starters. We expect Colorado to control this one while Philadelphia's thinned-out attack stays stuck, so both picks sit on the Flyers' side of the scoresheet: a low team total and a quiet night for their top-line center.

Puck drop is 7:00 PM ET Monday at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, on NBC Sports Philadelphia and Altitude.

Avalanche vs. Flyers Predictions

  • Pick #1: Philadelphia Team Total Under 2.5 (-130)
  • Pick #2: Christian Dvorak Under 1.5 Shots on Goal (-115)

PICK #1: Philadelphia Team Total Under 2.5 (-130)

Nine times in 10 games, Philadelphia has finished with two goals or fewer. Read it in order and it barely moves: 0, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1, then the 3 against Ottawa. The -130 price works out to a 56.5% chance. This offense has stayed under the number 90% of the time, and it now has key forwards hurt.

The injuries land on exactly the wrong players for Philadelphia. Foerster plays on the first line and the first power-play unit, and he took a shot off his hand Saturday. Couturier was "banged up a little," coach Rick Tocchet said. Tippett has 21 shots in nine games, second on the team behind Foerster's 22. Konecny has played only five games. If two or three of those forwards sit, the Flyers may have to call someone up, and they'll be doing it against the league's second-highest-scoring team, which should keep them in their own end for long stretches.

Colorado's back-to-back doesn't open a door in goal, either. If Jared Bednar saves Blackwood (.891 save percentage, 2.86 goals-against average) for New Jersey, Scott Wedgewood has a .902 and a 2.40 in his two starts.

Colorado can be scored on, though. The Avalanche allow 3.0 goals a game, around the middle of the league, and five of their eight opponents have reached three. Matvei Michkov and Porter Martone each had a goal and an assist Saturday, and the game total has climbed from 5.5 at the open to 6.5. Overtime goals count here, and a shootout adds one for the winner, so a 2-2 game that the Flyers win in a shootout beats this ticket.

PICK #2: Christian Dvorak Under 1.5 Shots on Goal (-115)

Saturday told you most of what you need on Dvorak. He centered the top line, played almost 22 minutes and finished without a shot on goal. He has nine shots in 10 games, has stayed under 1.5 in eight of them, and has none in his last two. At -115 the bet needs to come in 53.5% of the time.

He isn't short on ice time. Over his last five games he played between 17 and 22 minutes a night and put up 0, 0, 1, 3 and 0 shots. He plays as a passer here; his assist Saturday came on a night he never put a puck on net. He's on the second power-play unit, not the first. And if Couturier or Foerster can't go, Dvorak stays in the middle with weaker wingers around him, which doesn't make him more likely to shoot. Colorado has outscored opponents 36-24, and the more the Avalanche have the puck, the fewer looks a low-volume center gets.

Twice this season he's gotten there: three shots against Carolina on Oct. 11 and two in the opener against Pittsburgh. The way he beats this is a night where the Flyers trail late and push, or draw a string of power plays.
