No. 9 Virginia (2-0) and No. 12 Arkansas (1-0) meet at 1:00 PM ET in Washington, D.C., on a neutral floor in the Capital Showcase. Virginia kept the four core players from last season's 30-win team: Thijs De Ridder, Sam Lewis, Chance Mallory and Johann Grunloh. Arkansas lost its top three scorers to the NBA draft and now has the youngest roster in the power conferences. Both teams pressed full court and played fast in their first games. Virginia's veterans should handle the pressure and win a quick, high-scoring game by more than a possession, which is the game both picks need.

Arkansas vs. Virginia Predictions

  • Pick #1: Virginia -3.5 (-106)
  • Pick #2: Over 162.5 (-107)

PICK #1: Virginia -3.5 (-106)

Billy Richmond III is the only returning player in Arkansas's rotation. Everyone else in it is a freshman or a transfer. John Calipari said as much after the opener: "We're going to be playing a veteran team that's older, that's established. They're a top 10 team. We got work to do." Virginia has De Ridder, the preseason ACC Player of the Year, and he and Lewis are each scoring 20 a game. Mallory added 20 against Northeastern.

One widely used rating system makes Virginia about a four-point favorite with a 65% chance to win, a little more than this line asks. At -106, the implied probability is 51.5%. The spread money tracks the bets closely, so the splits don't tell us much.

Ball security is where this can go wrong. Virginia has 28 turnovers through two games, with six from Mallory against Drexel and six from Lewis against Northeastern. Arkansas forced 24 turnovers with 16 steals in its only game, a 106-61 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Grunloh played through an injured right ankle two days ago, and Virginia played then while Arkansas has had five days off. Neither school publishes an availability report, so both starting fives are projected, not confirmed: Virginia with Nolan Adekunle, De Ridder, Grunloh, Lewis and Mallory, and Arkansas with Miikka Muurinen, Cooper Bowser, Jeremiah Wilkinson, Jordan Smith Jr. and Richmond.

PICK #2: Over 162.5 (-107)

Virginia has run about 76 possessions in each of its two games and Arkansas about 78 in its only one, all against opponents well below this level. Keep that pace and 162.5 needs only a little more than a point per possession from each side. Virginia scored 89 against Drexel and 97 against Northeastern, and its 186 points are its most through two games since 2001-02. Arkansas put up 45 fast-break points against Pine Bluff, its most since the school started tracking the stat in 2011-12, and went 30-of-42 at the line.

Both teams press. Virginia forced 21 turnovers with 18 steals against Drexel and 19 with 12 steals against Northeastern. Ryan Odom described what he wants: "We're asking them to press. We're asking them to crash (the glass). ... And play fast." Mallory sees the game the same way: "who's more mentally prepared to be able to handle a press while also getting into a press."

The same rating system that likes Virginia projects only about 154 points, and one Arkansas beat writer calls Virginia the more methodical team. This early, ratings like that still rely heavily on preseason data, and the games so far have been fast. If Virginia walks the ball up and the presses turn into empty trips instead of layups, this falls short. The money on the total is split almost evenly, and -107 implies 51.7%.
