The East's top two teams meet at Little Caesars Arena at 7:00 PM ET, ten days after Detroit won 106-93 in Philadelphia. The 76ers are 7-1 with four straight wins, and the Pistons are 6-1 after a 124-91 rout at Charlotte in their last game. We expect a rerun of the first meeting: a slow, physical game decided by the league's best defense. Detroit allows 100.3 points a game, fewest in the NBA, and Philadelphia's 105.1 is tied for second. That's why we're on the Under, the Pistons to cover a short number at home, and Javonte Green to stay quiet off Detroit's bench.

Detroit is still without Jalen Duren (right hamstring strain) and Isaiah Joe (right hip contusion), both out on the latest injury report. Paul Reed has started at center in the last five games, and the Pistons won four of them. Philadelphia lists only Dominick Barlow and Ariel Hukporti as out. Lineups are projected: Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, LeBron James and Joel Embiid started together in the 76ers' last game.

76ers vs. Pistons Predictions

  • Pick #1: Under 217.5 (-110)
  • Pick #2: Pistons -2.5 (-106)
  • Pick #3: Javonte Green Under 6.5 Points (-126)

PICK #1: Under 217.5 (-110)

Neither offense scares anyone. Philadelphia scores 110.9 points a game (21st) and Detroit 111.9 (18th), while both defenses sit in the top three. The first meeting produced 199 points against a closing total of 228.5. Five of Detroit's seven games and four of Philadelphia's eight have stayed under 217.5, and the Pistons have held their last three opponents to 94 or fewer.

The number has come our way too. The total was posted at 219.5 and has dropped to 217.5, and that move isn't coming from the public: the Over has 52% of the bets and 54% of the money. At -110 the Under implies a 52.4% chance.

That first meeting does need a footnote. Embiid and Edgecombe both missed it, so Philadelphia brings a fuller lineup this time, and that group just put up 126 on Chicago. Maxey has scored 26 or more in five straight games. If this goes over, it's probably because he got loose.

PICK #2: Pistons -2.5 (-106)

When Detroit wins, it wins by margin. All six of its victories have come by eight points or more, the lone loss was at New York, and the Pistons are 2-0 at home. They won by 13 in Philadelphia with Reed starting in Duren's place. In a game played in the low 100s, we'd rather have the team that defends better, and that's Detroit.

This line opened at Pistons -1.5 and has moved to -2.5, with 68% of the spread money on Detroit from 58% of the bets. The -106 price implies 51.5%.

The market isn't sold on Detroit. Most of the moneyline money (73%) is on Philadelphia, and one model we checked has this close to a pick'em. The 76ers defend nearly as well as Detroit, they bring all five starters this time, and without Duren the Pistons have less size to throw at Embiid.

PICK #3: Javonte Green Under 6.5 Points (-126)

Green is a bench wing, and a grinding game doesn't leave much for him. He has come off the bench in all seven of Detroit's games, playing 13 to 22 minutes. After a 19-point opener against Boston with five 3-pointers, he has scored 5, 2, 3, 7, 6 and 5. That's five unders in seven games, a small sample, and he's made exactly one three in each of his last four.

His minutes aren't secure either. J.B. Bickerstaff sat him for the whole first half of the opener and said, "On any given night, anyone could have their opportunity." Joe being out shouldn't change much, since he hasn't played in any of Detroit's last four games and Green's minutes stayed between 17 and 22 through that stretch. At -126 the price implies 55.8%, and Philadelphia's defense, allowing 105.1 a game, makes seven points a stretch for a reserve.

The Boston game is the warning. Green averaged 6.9 points last season, and one hot shooting night clears this line on its own. A second made three on top of his usual night would do it.
