Two unbeaten teams meet in Philadelphia, and neither looks like the roster it started the week with. Detroit is 2-0 after beating Boston 121-113 and winning 128-111 at Miami, but center Jalen Duren is out with a right hamstring strain and Ausar Thompson is questionable with a right ankle sprain. Both got hurt in the Miami game. Philadelphia is 3-0 and beat Milwaukee 127-116 on Saturday behind Joel Embiid's 28 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in 36 minutes. Sunday is the back end of that back-to-back and the Sixers' fourth game in six days. Embiid said he'd play only one of the two, and local reports have him sitting this one, with LeBron James (back), who sat Saturday, expected back. Neither status is official.

Philadelphia opened -3.5 and is down to -1.5 at the consensus, with the Pistons +105 on the moneyline and the total at 227.5. Our view: Detroit keeps scoring at its pace against a tired Sixers team without Embiid, wins the game and pushes the total past the number. Tipoff is 7:30 PM ET at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Pistons vs. 76ers Predictions

  • Pick #1: Pistons Moneyline (+105)
  • Pick #2: Over 227.5 (-110)

PICK #1: Pistons Moneyline (+105)

Detroit has the better offense, the home team is on short rest and probably without its center, and you still get plus money.

The line has moved two points toward the Pistons since it opened. The money backs it: Detroit has 98% of the spread money on 86% of the spread bets, and 53% of the moneyline money on just 39% of the moneyline tickets. The bigger bets are on Detroit even where the ticket count isn't.

The Pistons are scoring 124.5 a game through two games, fifth in the league. The bench has pulled its weight. Javonte Green had 19 against Boston, and after Duren went down in Miami, Paul Reed had 19 points and 11 rebounds in 26 minutes. Reed is the projected starting center tonight. Detroit has won both games outright, and +105 implies a 48.8% chance.

James is the catch. He's expected to play, and he gives Philadelphia a second star with Embiid resting. If Embiid suits up after all, the case for Detroit is weaker. Philadelphia's defense has been solid, too, allowing 107.3 points a game through three games, seventh-fewest in the league, and Detroit's frontcourt is thinner without Duren and with Thompson a game-time call. If you'd rather take the points, Pistons +1.5 (-107) is the alternative.

PICK #2: Over 227.5 (-110)

Detroit's pace and a Sixers team playing its fourth game in six days point past 227.5. Both Detroit games have cleared this number, 234 points against Boston and 239 at Miami. Pool the two teams' games and three of five have gone over 227.5, with Philadelphia's 127-116 win over Milwaukee the third. Detroit's shooting is the engine: Duncan Robinson made five threes in each game, and John Collins and Green each had a five-three night. Philadelphia can answer. Against Milwaukee, VJ Edgecombe hit five threes and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope four.

The -110 price implies 52.4%, and at least one book deals 226.5 if you shop.

The Sixers' other two games are the problem. Their wins over New York (106-100) and Cleveland (114-106) stayed well under, and their defense is allowing 107.3 over three games. That's the best case against this. The Over is also the public side, with 94% of the total bets, and with no opening total there's no line move to read.

This is the same game as the moneyline pick: Detroit scoring like it has. A cold night from the Pistons sinks both.
