Penn State (4-4, 1-4 Big Ten) visits Washington (5-3, 2-3) at 3:30 PM ET at Husky Stadium in Seattle, and the Huskies are 2.5-point favorites. Penn State ended a four-game losing streak by beating Purdue 31-17, and Washington has won two straight, the last a 17-10 grind at Nebraska.

Look for a close game that both teams play through the air. Washington averages 95 rushing yards a game, so its offense runs through Chris Lawson, who has topped 75 yards in every Big Ten game. Penn State gets its leading receiver, Chase Sowell, back against a Washington defense that has allowed at least 202 passing yards to all five of its Big Ten opponents. When those Penn State drives get close, Carson Hansen has been the back finishing them. None of this depends on who wins. Demond Williams Jr. should start at quarterback for Washington after a fractured rib; Jedd Fisch said he would start if healthy, but it isn't confirmed. The forecast is mostly cloudy, around 60 degrees, with a light wind.

Penn State vs. Washington Predictions

  • Pick #1: Chris Lawson 60+ Receiving Yards (-144)
  • Pick #2: Chase Sowell 50+ Receiving Yards (-145)
  • Pick #3: Carson Hansen Anytime Touchdown (+145)

PICK #1: Chris Lawson 60+ Receiving Yards (-144)

In conference play, Lawson has been Washington's offense. He went for 77 against Minnesota, 82 at USC, 86 against Iowa, 103 at Purdue and 155 at Nebraska, where he caught 12 passes and the go-ahead touchdown. That's 100.6 yards a game against Big Ten defenses. Over the full season he's cleared 60 in six of seven games against FBS teams, and the only miss was 29 against Utah State early in the year.

It hasn't mattered who's throwing to him. Elijah Brown threw most of the passes against Iowa, Purdue and Nebraska, and Williams threw them against Minnesota and USC. Williams has been plain about it: "I have that trust that he's going to be where he needs to be and just give him chances." With no running game to speak of, Washington has to move the ball through the air, and Lawson is the first read.

Penn State is a real test. It ranks third in the country against the pass at 141.4 yards a game and has held six opponents under 150. At -144, the line sets the bar at 59.0%. We'll still take it, because 60 is a long way below what he's averaged in league play.

PICK #2: Chase Sowell 50+ Receiving Yards (-145)

Sowell missed the Purdue game and still leads Penn State with 34 catches and 510 yards. He has been listed as probable on every Big Ten availability report this week, and Matt Campbell said, "Chase is certainly…the word 'probable' is what I would use. He's in a really good spot."

He cleared 50 in all four Big Ten games he played: 70 against Wisconsin, 68 at Northwestern, 95 against USC and 151 at Michigan. His two misses this season, 33 and 35 yards, came in the 45-0 and 55-13 home wins over Marshall and Buffalo. Koby Howard is out again, so the targets Sowell drew in conference play are still his. Offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser put it simply: "When you don't have some of your most explosive athletes, like Chase and Koby, it makes things hard."

Washington's secondary is where Penn State can find yards. The Huskies gave up 204 to Minnesota, 245 to USC, 202 to Iowa, 273 to Purdue and 255 to Nebraska. At -145 the implied chance is 59.2%. Health is the risk: this is his first game back, and if he doesn't play, most books void the bet.

PICK #3: Carson Hansen Anytime Touchdown (+145)

Hansen has scored in four straight games, all from close range: 8 yards at Northwestern, 3 against USC, 2 at Michigan and 1 against Purdue. He's scored in five of eight games this season. The +145 price makes it a 40.8% shot.

Cam Wallace's breakout is what could cost this one. Wallace ran 22 times for 135 yards in his first career start against Purdue and scored from 2 yards out. Hansen still carried 17 times for 96 yards in that game and took the 1-yard touchdown. At Northwestern he had only four carries and scored anyway. Mouser talked about the pair, not one back: "Really proud of Cam and Carson."

This is where the Penn State passing game pays off. If Rocco Becht moves the ball to Sowell against Washington's secondary, Penn State gets into scoring range, and near the goal line Hansen has been the one finishing. It loses if Wallace gets the short carries or the drives stall into field goals.
