Sports betting law in Ontario
Parliament passed Bill C-218, the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act, in June 2021, and single-game betting became legal across Canada on August 27, 2021. Before that, Canadians could only bet on parlays through provincial lotteries. The law left it to each province to decide who could offer sports betting.
Ontario chose an open model. Private operators register with the AGCO, which sets the standards they must meet, and sign an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario, which runs the market. The market opened on April 4, 2022. iGaming Ontario started as a subsidiary of the AGCO and became an independent provincial agency on May 12, 2025.
The AGCO's standards cover advertising too. Operators can't advertise inducements in public, which is why this guide has no offers in it, and they can't use athletes in their ads. OLG still runs its own site, OLG.ca, outside the iGaming Ontario market.
Ontario teams to bet on
Ontario has teams in every major league plus the CFL and the PWHL, and Toronto now has a WNBA team too.
- Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators (NHL): The province's two NHL teams. The Leafs play at Scotiabank Arena, the Senators in Ottawa.
- Toronto Blue Jays (MLB): Won the 2025 American League pennant and took the Dodgers to Game 7 of the World Series, losing 5-4 in 11 innings on November 1, 2025.
- Toronto Raptors (NBA): Canada's only NBA team.
- Toronto Tempo (WNBA): Began play in May 2026 at Coca-Cola Coliseum as the first WNBA team outside the United States.
- Toronto Argonauts, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Ottawa Redblacks (CFL): The Argonauts won the 111th Grey Cup, beating Winnipeg 41-24 in November 2024.
- Toronto Sceptres and Ottawa Charge (PWHL): Two of the PWHL's eight teams. Montreal won the 2026 Walter Cup.
- Toronto FC (MLS): Plays at BMO Field, which hosted 2026 FIFA World Cup matches including Canada's opener.

FAQs
Is online sports betting legal in Ontario?
Yes. Ontario's regulated market opened on April 4, 2022. Legal sportsbooks are registered with the AGCO and operate under an agreement with iGaming Ontario, and the iGaming Ontario website lists every one of them.
How old do you have to be to bet on sports in Ontario?
You must be 19. Every app checks your age and identity when you sign up.
Which Ontario sportsbook should I download first?
It depends on how you bet. If you bet mostly live, Sports Interaction and bet365 put in-play markets front and centre. If you follow scores all day, theScore Bet keeps them in the same app.
Do you pay tax on sports betting winnings in Ontario?
Generally, no. The Canada Revenue Agency treats winnings from recreational betting as windfalls, not income. That changes only if your betting amounts to a business, and interest you earn on winnings is taxable.
Can I bet in Ontario if I live somewhere else?
Yes, as long as you are physically in Ontario when you bet. The apps check your location, and an Ontario account can't be used once you leave the province.
Can I bet on single games in Ontario?
Yes. Single-game betting has been legal across Canada since August 27, 2021, when Bill C-218 came into force. Before then, provincial lotteries only offered parlays.
How do I take a break from betting in Ontario?
Each app lets you set limits or take a time-out from your account settings. For a longer break, iGaming Ontario's BetGuard excludes you from every regulated online gambling site in Ontario at once.
