No. 21 Oklahoma and No. 12 North Carolina open their seasons at 2:30 PM ET on ESPN2 at Adidas Arena in Paris, a neutral floor. North Carolina is a 3.5-point favorite and the total is 150.5. Both teams made the Sweet 16 last season and both have rebuilt since. We expect a slow, disjointed first game that stays close and stays under the number, which is why we're on the Under and Oklahoma with the points.

This is a first look at both teams, so we're working from last season's numbers for the players who came back, two exhibitions and what the coaches have said. Oklahoma's starting five is projected, not posted, and North Carolina hasn't said whether forward Ciera Toomey, its leading returning scorer and rebounder, will play.

Oklahoma vs. North Carolina Predictions

  • Pick #1: Under 150.5 (-110)
  • Pick #2: Oklahoma +3.5 (-110)

PICK #1: Under 150.5 (-110)

Both coaches are still sorting out their rotations, and both have said as much. Jennie Baranczyk called Oklahoma "kind of this scattered puzzle right now" and said "you really have to figure out how those pieces work together." Courtney Banghart's verdict after a 72-68 exhibition loss at Maryland, where North Carolina shot 42.6% and was outrebounded 44-33: "we've got a lot of inexperience."

Oklahoma lost Raegan Beers (15.8 points and 10.4 rebounds last season) along with starters Zya Vann and Payton Verhulst. The Sooners' 85.9 points a game last season came with Beers in the middle, so we don't lean on it. The frontcourt now leans on two fifth-year transfer bigs, Sa'Myah Smith and Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu, who haven't played a real game for the Sooners. North Carolina hasn't sorted out who scores behind freshman Kate Harpring either. Oklahoma State transfer Achol Akot had 18 against Davidson and six at Maryland, and Reniya Kelly shot 2-of-12 across the two exhibitions.

The last time these programs met, in Charlotte, North Carolina won 61-52 and Oklahoma went 1-of-26 from three. The players are different. The coaches aren't. You're paying -110, which implies a 52.4% chance, and we think a first game like this one lands under 150.5 more often than that.

Hot shooting is what beats it. Oklahoma scored 124 in its exhibition, though that came against a Division II team. North Carolina made a program-record 295 threes last season, and Harpring scored 29 on 12-of-22 at Maryland. If either backcourt gets going early, 150.5 is reachable, and overtime would hurt.

PICK #2: Oklahoma +3.5 (-110)

The slower this game is, the more 3.5 points are worth. Oklahoma also brings back Aaliyah Chavez and Sahara Williams, who combined for 30.8 points a game last season. Chavez averaged 18.4 and scored in double figures in 33 of 34 games. Williams added 12.4 points and 7.9 rebounds. Both are in Oklahoma's projected starting five with Brooklyn Stewart, Keziah Lofton and LeeLee Bell.

North Carolina's leading returning scorer, Toomey, averaged 8.8 points last season. She missed both exhibitions, and Banghart said then that Toomey "probably" wouldn't have played in a regular-season game, though she was getting "close." Without her, the Tar Heels take a thinner frontcourt into a matchup with Oklahoma's transfer bigs, after losing the glass by 11 in their last exhibition. Guards Sophie Burrows and Gabby White also sat that one, but Banghart said both would have played in a regular-season game.

North Carolina was picked third in the ACC and Oklahoma sixth in the SEC. That gap is real, but it's a forecast for a whole season. In one game between two half-built rotations, we expect a margin of a possession or two, and at -110 (52.4% implied) we'd rather take the points.

Harpring is the risk. She averaged 23.0 points across the two exhibitions, and a big game from her, or a healthy Toomey, could turn this into a North Carolina win by four or more.
