Following an eventful offseason, the 2026 college football season is finally here, and we have a fascinating slate of Week 0 action to start the campaign. One of the marquee games on Saturday’s smaller slate is an ACC clash between the NC State Wolfpack and Virginia Cavaliers, both of whom have an outside chance of making a run at a conference title game appearance this season. With this important matchup nearly upon us, it’s time to dive into our expert’s college football predictions and best bets for Saturday’s showdown. 

Predictions

Pick #1 - NC State +4 (-110)

Pick #2 - Under 51.5 (-110)

Pick #3 - Victor Snow (NC State) over 39.5 receiving yards (-120) 

PICK #1: NC State Wolfpack +4 over Virginia Cavaliers (-110)

Both of these teams have plenty of questions heading into the campaign. NC State is dealing with plenty of roster turnover on both sides of the ball, particularly within the skill-position groups on offense. However, the Wolfpack did make a few shrewd moves in the transfer portal to offset some of their losses at wide receiver and on the offensive line. Furthermore, the NC State defense received an influx of Power Four talent — something that was sorely needed after a thoroughly disappointing 2025 season for this unit. Most importantly, as long as the Wolfpack have CJ Bailey — one of the best quarterbacks in the ACC — they’ll have more than a puncher’s chance against almost any team in the ACC.  

As for the hosts, Virginia is coming off a very successful 2025 season, but it was one that involved quite a bit of good fortune. In fact, not only did the Cavaliers win a number of one-score games, but most of those wins came in pretty improbable fashion. Now, Virginia will need to defend home field after replacing its entire wide receiver and running back room, while also installing new quarterback Beau Pribula into the offense. Don’t expect a massive showing from a Cavaliers offense that could take a few weeks to get going. At anything over a field goal, our expert sides with NC State.             

PICK #2: NC State vs Virginia Under 51.5 (-110)

We don’t have as much conviction on the total in this matchup, but the under is the more appealing play given that it’s above the key number of 51. This projects to be a pretty close contest from start to finish, but the game script should revolve around both teams creating methodical drives and avoiding catastrophic mistakes. Virginia should certainly look to run the ball behind its excellent offensive line, while NC State should make good use of the screen game and other short passing looks in order to keep Bailey upright against a Cavaliers defense that will be looking to apply pressure. Don’t expect a high-scoring affair in what should be a cagey season opener. 

PICK #3: Victor Snow (NC State) over 39.5 receiving yards (-120)

NC State is going to need its acquisitions in the transfer portal to make an immediate impact after losing its top two wideouts in the offseason. Victor Snow has that opportunity in a favorable matchup against a rebuilding Virginia secondary. The former Buffalo wideout cleared this receiving yards number in eight of his 12 games played a season ago, and if he’s able to secure a few early targets in the slot, the senior could certainly clear this number with time to spare.
