The Utah Mammoth visit the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena at 7:00 PM ET (TSN4, Utah16, Mammoth+), and we expect goals at both ends. Toronto scores 3.75 a game, fourth in the NHL. Utah scores 3.6, eighth. Neither defends well, with Utah allowing 3.47 a game (24th) and Toronto 3.31 (19th), and the goaltending is a big reason why. Coach Jim Hiller named Sergei Bobrovsky to start for Toronto, and Bobrovsky is 3-5-2 with an .885 save percentage, giving up three or more goals in nine of his ten starts. Utah hasn't named a starter. Karel Vejmelka (.872) is projected, and the other option, Sebastian Cossa, is at .855. So our three picks ride on one script: Toronto's top line scores, and Utah's best playmaker sets up goals at the other end.

Utah is a -130 favorite with Toronto at +110. The total is 6.5, the Over is -130, and almost all of the total action is on the Over. Utah has drawn 86% of the moneyline money on 57% of the bets. The Mammoth lost 6-3 in Philadelphia last time out, while the Leafs won 4-2 in Vancouver and now open a six-game homestand. Player prop settlement in overtime differs from book to book.

Mammoth vs. Maple Leafs Predictions

  • Pick #1: Auston Matthews Anytime Goal (+125)
  • Pick #2: Clayton Keller Over 0.5 Assists (-105)
  • Pick #3: Easton Cowan Over 0.5 Points (+110)

PICK #1: Auston Matthews Anytime Goal (+125)

Matthews has 11 goals in 16 games, and he has scored in 10 of them, 7 of his last 10. He scored in the last two games of the road trip, including the late tying goal in the 5-4 loss in Seattle. He centers the top line again tonight, and whichever goalie Utah starts has a save percentage under .875.

At +125 the price implies a 44.4% chance, and he has scored far more often than that all season. A quiet night can still happen. He didn't score against Calgary, the Rangers or the Islanders in his last ten.

PICK #2: Clayton Keller Over 0.5 Assists (-105)

At the other end, Utah's goals run through Keller. He has 14 assists in 15 games and at least one in 11 of them, including two in the loss in Philadelphia. He played on the top line with Nick Schmaltz in Utah's latest projected lineup, and he gets Bobrovsky, who has allowed three or more in nine of ten starts, behind a Toronto team giving up 3.31 a game.

The -105 price implies 51.2%, and he's cleared it in 11 of 15. The worry is special teams. Toronto's penalty kill has stopped 91.1% of chances, and 12 of Keller's 18 points have come on the power play. He was also held without an assist twice against Edmonton and once against Minnesota in his last ten.

PICK #3: Easton Cowan Over 0.5 Points (+110)

Hiller put Cowan back on the top line with Matthews and Jack Roslovic at practice and dropped Gavin McKenna to the third line. That matters, because this pick and Matthews want the same line to score. Cowan has 14 points in 16 games and a point in 11 of them, 7 of his last 10, with a three-point night against Columbus in there. His blank in Vancouver came on the second line.

+110 implies 47.6%. The risk is the coach. Hiller moves lines a lot, and the last time Cowan played on the top line, a rough game in Calgary got him moved down. If he starts lower in the lineup, most of the case for this one goes with it.
