Lions vs. Panthers Prediction, NFL Week 4 SNF Odds & Best Bets (10/4)

Fact checked at 8:30 AM ET, Oct 4, 2026
Odds as of Oct 4, 7:48 AM ET
Detroit (2-1) has scored exactly 31 points in all three games, and nobody in the league has been worse against the pass. The Lions are 3.5-point road favorites (-115) at the 1-2 Panthers, total 51. Carolina's injury list is the other half of the story: cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson went on injured reserve this week, and Jalen Coker, the team's leading receiver, is questionable and reported unlikely to play.
This total opened at 47.5 on Sep 22. By Sep 28 it was 50.5, the day after Detroit beat the Jets 31-24 and Carolina lost 21-18 at Cleveland. The spread has only crept from -3 to -3.5. The public is on the Over, with 83% of the bets and 73% of the money. We'd rather bet the pieces of that shootout directly: Carolina throwing against Detroit's secondary, and Detroit feeding Jahmyr Gibbs short passes.
Kickoff is 8:20 PM ET on NBC at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Inactives come out about 90 minutes before kickoff and aren't posted yet.
Lions vs. Panthers Predictions
- Pick #1: Bryce Young Over 240.5 Passing Yards (-111)
- Pick #2: Jahmyr Gibbs Over 4.5 Receptions (-125)
PICK #1: Bryce Young Over 240.5 Passing Yards (-111)
The league leader in passing yards per game gets the defense that gives up the most.
Young has 361 yards against Chicago, 287 at Atlanta and 291 at Cleveland, on 37, 36 and 48 attempts. That's 313 a game and he hasn't come within 45 yards of this line. Detroit has allowed 979 passing yards in three games, 326.3 a game, last in the league. Take sacks out and it's 299.3, still last. New Orleans's Tyler Shough threw for 410 on 56 attempts in the opener, Buffalo's Josh Allen had 248 on 31, and the Jets' Geno Smith put up 321 on 37, a lot of it late in a Detroit win. Yes, the Shough game inflates the average. Drop it and the other two still come to 284.5.
Detroit's secondary isn't the same group that played the opener. Rock Ya-Sin went from 89 snaps in Week 1 to 13 in Week 3, Avonte Maddox from 85 to none, and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. is expected to play more after 23 snaps against the Jets. D.J. Reed is questionable with a rib injury after limited practices all week. On Carolina's side, Young showed up on the practice report with a knee issue after Week 3, but he was a full participant every day and has no game designation.
What worries us is the receiving corps. Week 3 is the best preview: Xavier Legette, who went on injured reserve Saturday, was out, Coker left midway through the third quarter, and Young still threw for 291 on 48 attempts. Tonight Coker is reported unlikely to play, so the group could be thinner from the start. Protection is a concern too. He's been sacked two, two and three times, and left guard Damien Lewis is out, though right tackle Monroe Freeling cleared the concussion protocol Saturday and is set to start. The 8 PM forecast is a slight chance of showers with little or no wind.
At -111 the book is asking for 52.6%, and we think Young clears that. If Coker is ruled out, Darren Waller Over 30.5 receiving yards (-114) is the other way in. He drew 8 of Carolina's 42 targets in Week 3 after two and three in the first two games, but understand it rides on the same dropbacks as Young, so it isn't a hedge.
PICK #2: Jahmyr Gibbs Over 4.5 Receptions (-125)
Gibbs has caught 5 of 5 targets, then 6 of 8, then 7 of 8. That's 18 catches on 21 looks, and at least five in every game.
His share keeps growing. He drew 13% of Detroit's targets in Week 1, 21% in Week 2 and 26% in Week 3, while playing 57, 54 and 45 offensive snaps. No other Lions back has seen more than one target in a game. These are short throws, too: his receiving air yards went minus 4, 34 and 4. The catch count has held up whatever the score did. He had five in a 31-30 overtime win, six in a 41-31 loss at Buffalo and seven in a 31-24 win.
Don't read this as a matchup play. Running backs caught 14 of 16 targets against Carolina in three games, under five a game for entire backfields. The bet is about Gibbs's role, nothing more. He has no injury designation, and inactives aren't out.
The -125 price implies 55.6%, which is steep for a prop. Five catches means five or six targets and few drops, and in the opener he needed every one of his five targets. Goff's attempts have also slid from 39 to 38 to 32, so a game Detroit controls could shrink the volume. Carolina's numbers against backs cover only three games as well.
Prefer yardage? Gibbs Over 37.5 receiving yards (-111) works as the alternative, with 30, 61 and 65 so far. Both of our picks need the same kind of night: Carolina moving the ball through the air, and Detroit keeping pace with the short passes that go to Gibbs.
