Sacramento (0-3) visits San Antonio (1-2) for an 8:00 PM ET tipoff at Frost Bank Center. The Kings lost 121-96 at the Clippers, 128-120 to Portland and 123-112 to Memphis. The Spurs dropped home games to Oklahoma City (116-104) and Houston (114-110) before winning 122-106 at Dallas. Keegan Murray started Sacramento's first two games, missed the Memphis loss and is out again on the latest injury report, along with Maxime Raynaud, Dylan Cardwell, Ben Simmons and two-way player Sean Pedulla; none of those four has played this season. San Antonio is without Tobias Harris and Jayden Quaintance, who haven't played yet either. Neither team has confirmed its starters. The expected lineups are Darius Acuff Jr., Zach LaVine, De'Andre Hunter, Precious Achiuwa and Domantas Sabonis for Sacramento, and De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, Devin Vassell and Victor Wembanyama for San Antonio.

The consensus has the Spurs as 18.5-point favorites with a total of 230.5. We think San Antonio wins this game but doesn't get to 19. The Spurs haven't beaten anyone by more than 16, they're on the front end of a back-to-back, and Sacramento's offense keeps running through the same three players: LaVine, Acuff and Sabonis. That keeps the Kings inside the number and leaves Hunter, again, with few shots.

Kings vs. Spurs Predictions

  • Pick #1: Kings +18.5 (-112)
  • Pick #2: De'Andre Hunter Under 8.5 Points (-116)

PICK #1: Kings +18.5 (-112)

San Antonio hasn't won a game by 19 yet. Its one win came by 16 at Dallas, and it lost its two home games, to Oklahoma City by 12 and to Houston by 4. Three games in, the Spurs are scoring 112 a night and giving up 112. Sacramento, for all its losing, fell by 8 to Portland and by 11 to Memphis, so it has stayed inside this number in two of its three games.

The projections agree. DRatings has the Spurs by 10.9, and another public model projects a 122-107 final, a 15-point game. San Antonio is also on the front end of a back-to-back, with Utah waiting, and in the Dallas win none of its starters played more than 32 minutes. If the Spurs do build a big lead, we'd expect the bench to finish it, though that's our projection; the team hasn't said how it will handle the minutes.

Sacramento's points come from the top of the roster. LaVine, Acuff and Sabonis have scored 210 of the Kings' 328, and as long as those three play their usual minutes, Sacramento has enough offense to hang around. The -112 price implies a 52.8% chance, and the spread covers the full game, overtime included.

What could go wrong is the Kings' defense. They're allowing 124 points a game over three games, 28th in the league, and their only road game was the 25-point loss at the Clippers, when they scored 96.

PICK #2: De'Andre Hunter Under 8.5 Points (-116)

Hunter has started all three games and scored 6, 4 and 7. He just doesn't shoot much: 5, 4 and 7 field-goal attempts, while LaVine and Acuff have each taken at least 15 in every game. LaVine has scored 28, 22 and 37, Acuff 12, 33 and 22, and Sabonis 14, 27 and 15.

Extra minutes didn't move him, either. Against Memphis, with Murray out, Hunter played 29 minutes, his most of the season, and finished with 7. Murray is out again, so that's the role to expect in this one. He went 1 of 2 at the free-throw line that night and 0 of 4 at the Clippers, so he isn't padding his totals at the line. At -116, the implied probability is 53.7%.

The case against is his longer record. Hunter averaged 13.7 points last season, mostly with Cleveland, and he's a 14.6-point scorer for his career. In Sacramento it's been different: 6.4 points a game over five games, counting two late last season. He has made two threes in two of his three games this season, and a third three would push him past 8.5. He's expected to start again, though the Kings haven't confirmed it.
