The Los Angeles Kings wrap up a five-game road trip at the United Center, puck drop at 8:00 PM ET, on the second night of their first back-to-back of the season. They're 3-5-2 after a 6-3 win over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, their third win in four games on the trip. Drew Doughty had three points that night and Artemi Panarin scored his team-leading seventh goal, and coach Peter Laviolette said afterward he wanted to run the bench and keep a lot of players under 20 minutes to help with the next game. The Blackhawks are 3-8-0 and have lost three straight, most recently 3-2 to Florida.

We expect the Kings' top line to carry the play. Chicago has been bad at both ends: 2.18 goals a game (31st of 32), 3.91 allowed (also 31st) and 30.55 shots on goal allowed a night. That sets up a busy night for Adrian Kempe and a quiet one for Patrick Kane, so we're taking Kempe over his shot total and Kane under his.

Neither starting goalie is confirmed. Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves in New York, and Los Angeles hasn't said who starts the second game of the set; Spencer Knight is expected in Chicago's net. Both picks are shot props, so the goalie question matters less here. Player props can settle differently in overtime at different books.

Kings vs. Blackhawks Predictions

  • Pick #1: Adrian Kempe Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-125)
  • Pick #2: Patrick Kane Under 2.5 Shots on Goal (-135)

PICK #1: Adrian Kempe Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-125)

Kempe had seven shots on goal against the Rangers, five against the Islanders and six in Washington. He's the Kings' volume shooter, with 35 shots through 10 games (3.5 a night), and he's topped 2.5 in seven of them. The -125 price implies 55.6%.

His role fits the volume. The Kings' most recent projected lines have him on the right wing with Panarin and Alex Laferriere and on the first power-play unit, and he's played at least 18 minutes in all 10 games. That top unit was reshuffled in practice before the New York game, with Erik Gustafsson moved to the point, and it scored on its first chance at the Garden. Only one team has allowed more goals per game than Chicago.

He does have empty nights. He had no shots in a 3-1 loss in New Jersey and one apiece against Edmonton and Boston, so a dud is part of the same 10-game run. His longer record is less convincing: last season he reached three shots in 42 games, about half of them, so this bet leans on the role he has now, on the first line and the top power-play unit. Tired legs are the other worry on the back half of a back-to-back, though Laviolette spread the minutes in New York with this game in mind, and Kempe played 18:26 there.

PICK #2: Patrick Kane Under 2.5 Shots on Goal (-135)

Kane hasn't been shooting much, and a Kings team that controls the puck gives him even less to work with. He's stayed under 2.5 in 7 of his last 10, with these totals, newest first: 2, 3, 3, 2, 0, 5, 0, 2, 0, 0. Four of those games ended without a shot on goal. Outside a five-shot night against Carolina, he hasn't had more than three in that stretch.

He played on Chicago's first line with Connor Bedard and Roman Kantserov in the last game, and on the first power-play unit, at 18 to 21 minutes a night. He had two shots in the loss to Florida. The Blackhawks have scored 2.18 goals a game, 31st in the league. Los Angeles allows 28.8 shots a game.

At -135, the implied probability is 57.4%. His full record sits closer to the price. He went under in 38 of 67 games last season (56.7%), about break-even at -135, so the edge has to come from this matchup and the low-volume role he's had this season. The recent games are the risk. Since Bedard made his season debut against Pittsburgh, Kane has topped 2.5 twice in five games, with three shots against Montreal and three against Dallas. If the Kings' legs go and Chicago spends the night in the offensive zone, this one loses.
