Florida State (3-5, 1-4 ACC) visits Boston College (4-4, 2-3) at 12:00 PM ET at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill. The Seminoles fired Mike Norvell the day after a 36-24 home loss to Clemson, and interim coach Rick Stockstill debuts without the team's top receiver, Duce Robinson (torn ACL), or its top running back, Ousmane Kromah (ankle). Boston College is coming off a 47-2 loss at Duke. Florida State is a 6-point favorite and the total is 52.5.

This looks like a low-scoring game that stays inside one score. Boston College can't score much, and Florida State has lost the two players who carried its offense. On top of that, the Eagles' ball-hawking defense gets a quarterback who throws interceptions. The rain should be tapering off by kickoff, with temperatures near 60 and a light wind.

Florida State vs. Boston College Predictions

  • Pick #1: Under 52.5 (-114)
  • Pick #2: Boston College +6 (-110)

PICK #1: Under 52.5 (-114)

Boston College games don't get to 53. Six of its seven games against FBS teams finished under this total, three of them at exactly 49, and the only exception was the 49-27 win at Georgia Tech. The Eagles score 21.6 points a game, 111th in the country, with the 113th-ranked passing offense. They managed 213 yards at Duke. Top running back Evan Dickens is out for the season, and starting center Michael Crounse is out with the injury he suffered in that game.

Florida State is why the number sits this high. Its last three games all went over, and its defense allowed 36 or more points in each. Those came against Louisville, Miami and Clemson, though, not an offense ranked 111th in scoring. Florida State's own attack is thinner now, too. Robinson had 24 catches for 438 yards and four touchdowns, Kromah had 609 rushing yards, and Samuel Singleton Jr. is also listed out. That leaves Quintrevion Wisner, who ran 13 times for 43 yards against Clemson. Most of the beat-writer score predictions we read land in the 40s.

The price of -114 implies a 53.3% chance, and a 27-20 Florida State win stays under. Turnovers are what could wreck it. Boston College's defense lives on them, and a couple of short fields can add 14 points in a hurry.

PICK #2: Boston College +6 (-110)

Florida State has lost 12 straight road games. It now brings a new head coach, a new play-caller in offensive coordinator Tim Harris Jr. and an interim defensive coordinator to Chestnut Hill. Boston College is 3-1 at Alumni Stadium, and all four of those games, including one against FCS Maine, were decided by seven points or fewer.

The turnover battle should help the Eagles. They lead the ACC with 14 takeaways and 11 interceptions, and Ashton Daniels has thrown the most interceptions in the conference. He passed for 350 yards against Clemson but was picked off three times, and Florida State gave the ball away four times in that game. The spread money tilts slightly toward the home side, with 52% of it on Boston College from 43% of the bets. At -110 the line puts it at 52.4%.

Most Florida State beat writers expect an interim-coach bump and pick the Seminoles by 5 to 18 points. Boston College's weak offense also cuts against us: the Eagles have won or stayed within six in only three of seven FBS games. We'll still trust a 12-game road skid and the interceptions over the idea that a coaching change fixes everything in a week. Both starting quarterbacks, Daniels and Mason McKenzie, are expected to play but haven't been confirmed.
