The 76ers (6-1) host the Bulls (1-5) at Xfinity Mobile Arena at 7:30 PM ET on NBA League Pass. Philadelphia is an 11.5-point favorite, and the gap shows on defense. Through seven games the 76ers allow 104.9 points a game, second-fewest in the league. Chicago allows 129.3 through six, the most. We're betting on that gap through the two players who run each offense: Tyrese Maxey gets the league's most generous defense, and Josh Giddey, a passer first in Chicago's new offense, runs into one of its stingiest.

Joel Embiid is questionable on the latest injury report with right foot plantar fascia injury management. Both of his absences this season came on the second night of a back-to-back, and this game has off days on both sides. Chicago's Nic Claxton is doubtful with a hamstring strain and hasn't played this season. Neither pick needs Embiid: Maxey has scored 25 or more with and without him. Starting lineups are projected.

Bulls vs. 76ers Predictions

  • Pick #1: Tyrese Maxey Over 25.5 Points (-120)
  • Pick #2: Josh Giddey Under 11.5 Points (-113)

PICK #1: Tyrese Maxey Over 25.5 Points (-120)

Maxey has scored 25 or more in all seven games this season, and he has done it with every version of this roster. His last five, newest first: 38 at Charlotte with LeBron James and Embiid both resting, 27 against New York with Jaylen Brown out, 27 at Indiana with everyone available, 29 against Detroit without Embiid and 26 against Milwaukee without James. All five were starts of 34 to 38 minutes. After the Knicks win, Nick Nurse said that with an impact scorer missing, "somebody of the three is probably going to be out there on their own. That was Tyrese tonight."

Chicago allows 129.3 points a game, last in the league through six games. With Claxton out, the Bulls start Jalen Smith at center, a 6-foot-8 shooter who can't protect the rim.

The -120 price implies 54.5%. The thin spot is his full-strength games: 26 and 27 clear this line by a half point and a point and a half, and James, Brown and possibly Embiid are all in the projected lineup. If Embiid sits, Maxey's role only grows.

PICK #2: Josh Giddey Under 11.5 Points (-113)

Giddey is averaging 8.5 points and has stayed under 11.5 in five of six games: 2 at Toronto, 6 at Milwaukee, 9 against Washington, 11 at Boston, 10 against New York and 13 in the second Boston game. The scoring goes through Caleb Wilson, at 21.2 points a game, and Norman Powell. Giddey's job is to set them up, with 9, 10, 4, 11 and 5 assists in his last five.

His minutes have a ceiling too. He played 24 to 31 minutes in those five starts, and Tiago Splitter has gone to Tre Jones in his place late in close games. Against a Philadelphia defense allowing 104.9 a game, second in the league, a game that gets away from Chicago takes even more of the floor away from him.

The Under at -113 implies 53.1%. He has scored 10, 11 and 13 in three of his last four, so this line sits close to his recent range, and one hot shooting night beats it.
