No. 25 Boise State (7-1, 4-0 Pac-12) visits Colorado State (3-5, 1-3) at 6:00 PM ET in Fort Collins, and it comes without its starting quarterback. Maddux Madsen is out on the Pac-12's latest availability report after hurting his knee in the fourth quarter of last week's 46-45 win over Texas State. Max Cutforth is in line to start after throwing three touchdown passes in the final minutes of that comeback. Running back Sire Gaines and offensive lineman Carson Rasmussen are also out for the Broncos.

Boise State should win this, just not by 17. Colorado State has the worst defense in FBS, allowing 42.4 points and 261.1 rushing yards a game, so Dylan Riley and his FBS-best 1,049 rushing yards should have a big night. But the Rams score too. They average 35.5 points, Boise State gives up 260.8 passing yards a game, and when Colorado State gets close to the goal line, the ball goes to Durell Robinson. Our two picks need the same thing: the Rams keep putting up points, and Robinson is the one finishing drives.

Boise State vs. Colorado State Predictions

  • Pick #1: Durell Robinson Anytime Touchdown (-150)
  • Pick #2: Colorado State +16.5 (-108)

PICK #1: Durell Robinson Anytime Touchdown (-150)

Robinson has scored in six straight games: once against BYU, twice at UTSA, once against Oregon State, twice at Texas State, three times against San Diego State (one on a catch) and once at Utah State. The only FBS team that kept him out of the end zone was Wyoming in the opener. His nine rushing touchdowns match Riley's.

The work is there too. He carried 21 times against Oregon State, 19 against San Diego State and 16 at Utah State. He also kept scoring through the quarterback change, first with K'saan Farrar starting while Hauss Hejny missed three games with a hamstring injury, then after Hejny came back. Robinson played for coach Jim Mora at UConn two seasons ago.

He has scored in 86% of his FBS games, and -150 implies 60.0%. Boise State also just gave up 45 points to Texas State.

The catch is his status. Robinson is questionable with an undisclosed injury on the latest Pac-12 report, a downgrade from probable earlier in the week. If he doesn't play, an anytime touchdown bet is usually voided. Mel Brown, the Rams' leading rusher, is questionable too after missing the Utah State game, and a healthy Brown would take carries. Boise State allows 99.5 rushing yards a game, so Robinson's touchdown probably has to come from short range.

PICK #2: Colorado State +16.5 (-108)

Three of Boise State's seven FBS games were decided by a touchdown or less: it lost at Oregon by seven, won at Fresno State by seven and beat Texas State by one. Now it plays without Madsen, who has 15 touchdown passes and one interception. Coach Spencer Danielson doesn't expect the offense to change much: "schematically, it's been our goal to have Max be able to go out and do all the things we need to do in order to execute the game plan." Cutforth still has to do that for four quarters on the road.

Colorado State has scored 26 or more in five of its seven FBS games, and all three of its wins came in Fort Collins. Hejny is back after missing three games, and the Rams put up 56 on San Diego State in his first start back. Boise State's pass defense ranks 127th nationally, and the Rams like to take deep shots on early downs. Give Colorado State four touchdowns and Boise State needs 45 to cover.

-108 implies a 51.9% chance, and the record against it is real. Boise State has won by more than 16.5 in four of its seven FBS games. Colorado State has covered 16.5 in only three of seven, with lopsided losses to BYU, Oregon State and Texas State and a 17-point loss at Utah State last week, when it scored a season-low 14. About two-thirds of the spread bets are on the Rams. If the Rams' offense stalls again while Riley runs through the nation's worst run defense, this one gets away.
