Two of the league's three lowest-scoring teams meet at Xfinity Mobile Arena, with the puck dropping at 7:00 PM ET. The Flyers (3-7-3) have 24 goals in 13 games, 1.85 a game and the fewest in the NHL. The Blue Jackets (4-5-0) rank 30th at under two and a half a game. The consensus line opened with Philadelphia as a short home favorite and has flipped to Columbus -127, Philadelphia +106. Inside that move, the Flyers announced that defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen will miss about two weeks after re-injuring his left hand in his first game back from a nine-game absence, and Travis Konecny, Owen Tippett and Cam York remain on injured reserve. Jet Greaves (.883 save percentage, 3.34 goals-against average) is the expected starter for Columbus and Dan Vladar (.900, 3.15) for Philadelphia, which is on the front end of a back-to-back. Joseph Woll started the Flyers' last game. Neither goalie has been confirmed.

Our read: Philadelphia's attack stays as quiet as its season numbers say it is, and Columbus wins a low-scoring game. We're backing the Blue Jackets on the moneyline and taking Matvei Michkov under his shot total, since the Flyers' hottest scorer has been cashing in on a handful of shots rather than firing away.

Blue Jackets vs. Flyers Predictions

  • Pick #1: Blue Jackets Moneyline (-127)
  • Pick #2: Matvei Michkov Under 2.5 Shots on Goal (-150)

PICK #1: Blue Jackets Moneyline (-127)

Philadelphia doesn't create much. The Flyers average 22.7 shots on goal a game, and Columbus allows 27.7, so there's little here to suggest they get extra looks. A team with 24 goals in 13 games doesn't need Columbus to score many to lose.

The market agrees. The consensus opened with the Flyers as a short favorite and now has Columbus at -127. The Ristolainen news landed inside that move, so treat the price change and the injury as one signal. He has played only four of Philadelphia's 13 games anyway, which means the Flyers' numbers were mostly built without him. Konecny, Tippett and York are still on injured reserve, which leaves the same thin forward group and blue line that produced those numbers.

At -127, the implied probability is 55.9%. The moneyline includes overtime and the shootout, so a one-goal Columbus win in extra time still cashes. Columbus has won four of its nine games.

This isn't a comfortable price for a road team that is 0-2-0 away from home and doesn't score much itself. The Flyers also have 14 goals in their last five games and three or more in four of them, after just 10 in their first eight, and they won three of those five. A late goalie change on either side would change the matchup too.

PICK #2: Matvei Michkov Under 2.5 Shots on Goal (-150)

Michkov has been Philadelphia's finisher this season more than its volume shooter. He has eight goals on 19 shots, a 42.1% shooting percentage, and over his last 10 games he has seven goals on 15 shots. He finished with two shots or fewer in eight of those 10 and in 11 of his 13 games this season, and three has been his ceiling every night.

His longer record points the same way. He had 163 shots in 81 games last season, almost exactly two a game, so a 2.5 line sits above his norm there too. He plays on the second line with Noah Cates and Porter Martone and on the first power-play unit in the latest posted line combinations, the same role he has had while putting up these numbers.

The -150 price implies 60.0%. The team context also fits the game we expect: a club averaging 22.7 shots a game doesn't spread many attempts across its forwards, and Columbus allows 27.7.

The workload is the worry. His ice time has climbed to 18:15 and 18:02 in his last two games, after 12:54 to 16:40 in the eight before that, and he has reached three shots in two of his last four. More ice time is how an Under gets beaten, and at -150 this one isn't cheap. Player props may settle differently in overtime at different books.
