Baylor and UCF are both 4-3 and 2-2 in the Big 12 heading into a 7:30 PM ET kickoff on ESPN at Acrisure Bounce House. We think this stays close and that Baylor has to win it through the air. The Bears don't run it well, UCF doesn't give up much on the ground, and the Knights are missing two starters in the secondary. Both picks come from there: DJ Lagway keeps throwing, and Louis Brown IV gets his share of it.

Baylor fired Dave Aranda after a 25-24 loss at Kansas and made defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman interim head coach for the rest of the season. Jake Spavital still calls the plays, and Klanderman has said he wants him to be as creative as he wants to be. UCF comes in off a 39-31 double-overtime win over then-No. 2 BYU. UCF opened as a short favorite, but the line has flipped: Baylor is now -1.5 at most books, with the total around 48.5.

Baylor vs. UCF Predictions

  • Pick #1: DJ Lagway 230+ Passing Yards (-199)
  • Pick #2: Louis Brown IV 40+ Receiving Yards (-101)

PICK #1: DJ Lagway 230+ Passing Yards (-199)

Volume is the bet here. Lagway has thrown 217 passes in five games for Baylor, 43.4 a game, and all three times he has thrown 40 or more he has cleared this number. He has 333 yards against Auburn, 306 at Arizona State, 256 against TCU and 236 at Kansas, with 221 against Colorado the only miss. The 256 came in a 17-6 loss where Baylor never reached the end zone. The 236 took just 31 attempts.

The objection is his longer record. At Florida last season he averaged about 189 yards a game and reached 230 in 4 of 12 starts, but he threw only 28 passes a game there, which was a very different job. Baylor averages 278.9 passing yards and 146.1 rushing, and it managed 54 on the ground against TCU and 122 at Kansas. UCF allows 118.0 rushing yards and 239.7 passing, and safety Demari Henderson and cornerback DJ Bell are both out on the latest Big 12 report.

At -199 the price implies 66.6% and five games is a small sample, so this isn't a bargain. He's 4 of 5, and we like the volume at this number, but he's completing 52.1% of his passes and one bad night can leave him short. The forecast has northeast wind at 5 to 15 mph, gusts as high as 25 and a 20% chance of showers. Lagway isn't on the injury report. If someone else starts, pass.

PICK #2: Louis Brown IV 40+ Receiving Yards (-101)

Brown gets the same game script as Lagway, and he costs a lot less. With Lagway at quarterback he has 62 against Auburn, 68 at Arizona State and 74 against TCU, so he has cleared 40 in three of five. Add the two games Nate Bennett started (21 against Prairie View, 79 against Louisiana Tech) and he's 4 of 7, with 345 yards, or 49.3 a game. The -101 implies 50.2%.

TCU looks most like what we expect tonight. Baylor couldn't run, Lagway threw 53 times, and Brown caught five passes for 74 yards. Gavin Freeman, with 58 catches and 678 yards, gets the ball first and will get UCF's attention, and a secondary without Henderson and Bell has fewer answers for whoever's next.

The misses are ugly: one catch for 23 against Colorado and two for 18 at Kansas, where Freeman had nine catches for 123. Seven games is a small sample, and he had only six catches for 79 yards before redshirting in 2025. His last full season helps: 38 catches for 620 yards at San Diego State in 2024, with 40 or more in 6 of 11 games. He isn't on the injury report either. If Lagway doesn't start, pass.
