No. 9 BYU (7-1) visits No. 3 Utah (8-0) at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, with kickoff at 12:00 PM ET. Utah is a 4.5-point favorite, and the winner takes a big step toward the Big 12 title game. Utah should win, and BYU should spend much of the game throwing to keep up. Utah's defense is built to stop the run, and the Cougars' ground game has faded while star running back LJ Martin has been out with an ankle injury. That puts this game on Bear Bachmeier's arm, and both picks come out of it.

BYU vs. Utah Predictions

  • Pick #1: Utah Moneyline (-189)
  • Pick #2: Bear Bachmeier 190+ Passing Yards (-198)

PICK #1: Utah Moneyline (-189)

BYU's run game has gone the wrong way, and Utah is the wrong team to try to fix it against. The Utes give up 101.4 rushing yards a game and held Kansas to 58 and Houston to 86 in their last two home games. BYU went for 177 against Iowa State after Martin got hurt, then 121 against Notre Dame, 116 at UCF and 47 against Arizona State.

The rest of Utah's profile holds up too. It has beaten all seven FBS teams it has played, five of them by 14 points or more, and it allows 15.9 points a game. BYU is also short in the secondary: cornerbacks Jonathan Kabeya and Seth Shigg and safety Joseph Douglas are out on the latest Big 12 availability report, and starting cornerback Evan Johnson is doubtful. Utah has 61% of the moneyline bets and 68% of the money.

We're taking the moneyline because of the rivalry. BYU has won the last three meetings, the last two by three points and by one, and two local previews pick the Cougars in a close game. A Utah win of any size pays this. Martin is questionable, and reports have him on track to dress and try to play in a limited role. Utah at -189 is priced as a 65.4% chance, and an 8-0 home team facing an offense whose run game has stalled should clear that. Devon Dampier and Bachmeier are the expected starting quarterbacks, not confirmed ones.

PICK #2: Bear Bachmeier 190+ Passing Yards (-198)

Bachmeier has reached 190 passing yards in seven of his eight games. Without Martin he has thrown for 329 against Iowa State, 224 against Notre Dame, 257 at UCF and 236 against Arizona State. He cleared it with Martin in the backfield too: 198 against FCS Utah Tech, 217 against Arizona and 227 at Colorado State. A limited Martin doesn't take the ball out of his hands.

Utah is easier to throw on than to run on. It allows 229 passing yards a game, and each of its last five opponents threw for more than 200. Bachmeier has been sacked only five times all season, so BYU's drives haven't been dying behind the line. If Utah gets ahead, the Cougars have to throw.

The one miss came at TCU. Martin went down early, BYU won a slow game 17-10, and Bachmeier finished with 62 passing yards. If BYU gets in front and keeps the ball on the ground, this loses. The -198 price implies 66.4%. That isn't cheap, but seven of eight sits well above it. His start, like Dampier's, still isn't official.
