No. 2 Duke opens its season against Army at 6:30 PM ET at Cameron Indoor Stadium on ESPNU, laying 44.5 points with a total of 153.5. We think Duke scores whenever it wants, Army keeps launching threes at the other end, and the Duke starters are sitting before the margin gets out of hand. A 99-59 game is roughly what we have in mind, and that clears the total while keeping Army inside the number.

This is an opener, so it rests on last season's numbers, the returning rosters and what the coaches have said. Duke went 35-3 but lost its top two scorers to the draft and added nine newcomers. Army went 11-21, was picked last in the Patriot League and brings back four starters. Neither team has announced a lineup.

Army vs. Duke Predictions

  • Pick #1: Over 153.5 (-112)
  • Pick #2: Army +44.5 (-115)

PICK #1: Over 153.5 (-112)

Army plays a style that puts points on the board at both ends. Last season it took 32.7 threes a game, 53.4% of its shots, and led the Patriot League with 10.6 makes a game. It also allowed 77.2 points a game. "We like to play fast. We like to play free," coach Kevin Kuwik said. "We like to let it fly, but we can't let our offense dictate our defense." Four starters are back, including Ryan Curry, who averaged 13.3 points last season, and Kevin McCarthy, who took 159 of his 223 shots from three.

Duke wants to speed up as well. Jon Scheyer has talked about "advancing the ball, trying to put pressure on the defense, playing with better pace," and that's coming off a season in which Duke ranked fifth nationally in offensive efficiency. Four of the top six scorers from that team are back.

The last two meetings produced 173 and 158 points. Duke's six games against teams from outside the major conferences last season averaged 157.5 combined points, and three of the six went over this number. Different Duke roster, sure, but both coaches want to run. The Over at -112 implies a 52.8% chance, and we have it a little higher.

Army's shooting is the risk. It scored 59 and 58 in the last two meetings and made 32.4% of its threes last season. If those shots don't fall and Duke's bench plays a long, sloppy second half, the game can stall short of the number.

PICK #2: Army +44.5 (-115)

The game that clears the total should also keep Army inside 45. Duke plays Michigan State next week and has no reason to ride its starters here, and a long rotation is expected. Scheyer has said his freshmen "are going to have moments of playing more, playing less."

Last season's blowouts mostly stopped short of this number. Against those six opponents from outside the major conferences, Duke won by 41, 55, 38, 58, 37 and 24. Four of the six landed inside 44.5, and that team had Cameron Boozer. Two seasons ago Duke beat Army 100-58, a 42-point margin that would have covered by two and a half points.

Army is more experienced than most teams in its spot. Curry, McCarthy, Jacen Holloway (10.8 points last season) and Tate Laczkowski all started last season, and they're projected to start again. "To have those four guys who have been through it is awesome," Kuwik said.

The price, -115, implies 53.5%. The downside is obvious. Army is rated near the bottom of Division I, Laczkowski at 6-foot-9 is its only projected starter taller than 6-foot-5, and Duke won by 55 at West Point last season. If Army's young bench has to play real minutes, the margin can get away quickly.
