Alberta opened its regulated online market on July 13, 2026. Until then PlayAlberta was the only legal online option. Now private sportsbooks can operate here once they register with Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) and sign an agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation, and about 20 sportsbooks are on the corporation's list.

Below are the seven Alberta sportsbooks we review and what each one does well. After them come the sign-up and betting steps, the age and location rules, how winnings are taxed and where to get help.

Registered Alberta betting apps

All seven are registered with the AGLC and listed by the Alberta iGaming Corporation. Each runs an Alberta product in Canadian dollars.

Sports betting law in Alberta

Single-game betting became legal across Canada on August 27, 2021, when Bill C-218 came into force. For the next five years, Albertans could bet online legally only through PlayAlberta, the site AGLC runs.

That changed with the iGaming Alberta Act, which received royal assent in May 2025. It created the Alberta iGaming Corporation to oversee the market and kept AGLC as the regulator. Operators register with AGLC first, then sign a commercial agreement with the corporation. The market opened on July 13, 2026, and PlayAlberta still runs alongside the private sites.

Operators keep 80% of net iGaming revenue and the province keeps 20%, after 3% of gross revenue goes to First Nations and social responsibility programs. The advertising rules are strict. Operators can't advertise inducements in public, which is why you won't see offers in this guide, and athletes can appear in their ads only to promote safer play. Every ad also has to point to responsible gambling help, including 211 Alberta.

Alberta teams to bet on

Alberta's betting calendar runs on hockey and CFL football, and this year the Grey Cup comes to Calgary.

  • Edmonton Oilers (NHL): Reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2024 and 2025 and lost both to Florida.
  • Calgary Flames (NHL): Scotia Place, the team's new arena, is scheduled to open in fall 2027.
  • Edmonton Elks and Calgary Stampeders (CFL): The 113th Grey Cup is on November 15, 2026 at McMahon Stadium in Calgary.

Responsible gambling in Alberta

Set a budget before you bet and use the deposit, wager and time limits every registered app offers. If betting stops being fun, call the GameSense Info Line at 1-833-447-7523, call or text 211 to reach 211 Alberta, or call the Alberta Health Services Addiction Helpline at 1-866-332-2322, open 24 hours a day. AGLC's centralized Self-Exclusion Program lets you exclude yourself from every registered iGaming site in Alberta, from land-based casinos and racing entertainment centres, or from both.

FAQs

Is online sports betting legal in Alberta?

Yes. Alberta's regulated market opened on July 13, 2026. Legal sportsbooks are registered with AGLC and listed by the Alberta iGaming Corporation, and PlayAlberta is still available too.

How old do you have to be to bet on sports in Alberta?

You must be 18. Every app checks your age and identity when you sign up.

Which Alberta sportsbook should I download first?

It depends on how you bet. If you bet live, Sports Interaction and bet365 put in-play markets up front. If you like player props, BetRivers collects them on one page.

Do you pay tax on sports betting winnings in Alberta?

Generally, no. The Canada Revenue Agency treats winnings from recreational betting as windfalls, not income. That changes only if your betting amounts to a business, and interest you earn on winnings is taxable.

Can I bet in Alberta if I live somewhere else?

Yes, as long as you are physically in Alberta when you bet. You can sign up from anywhere, but the apps check your location before each bet.

Can I still use PlayAlberta?

Yes. PlayAlberta is run by AGLC and kept operating when the private market opened. It is one option among the registered sites.

How do I take a break from betting in Alberta?

Each app lets you set limits or take a time-out from your account settings. For a longer break, AGLC's centralized Self-Exclusion Program covers every registered iGaming site in the province.
