San Antonio (2-2) visits Utah (1-3) on the second night of a back-to-back, a night after beating Sacramento 130-103 at home. Tip-off is 9:00 PM ET at the Delta Center. Utah is short up front. Jaren Jackson Jr. tore the MCL in his right knee in the Jazz's 110-105 loss to Memphis and is out for at least six weeks, Jusuf Nurkic is out, and Lauri Markkanen (right wrist sprain) and Jaxson Hayes (right shoulder) are questionable on the latest official report. San Antonio had not filed its report when we checked.

We think the Spurs win this one, just not by 13. Utah has kept three of its four games within single digits, and with the frontcourt thinned out, the offense runs through Keyonte George, who has scored 20 or more in three of four games. Victor Wembanyama should own the glass against a team this short on size, which leaves De'Aaron Fox doing what he has done all season: running the offense rather than rebounding. A Spurs win inside the number, with George carrying Utah, cashes all three picks.

San Antonio opened -11.5 and moved to -12.5, with the moneyline at -649 against +450 for Utah.

Spurs vs. Jazz Predictions

  • Pick #1: Jazz +12.5 (-105)
  • Pick #2: Keyonte George 20+ Points (-130)
  • Pick #3: De'Aaron Fox Under 4.5 Rebounds (-158)

PICK #1: Jazz +12.5 (-105)

Laying twelve and a half with a road team on the back end of a back-to-back is asking a lot. Utah lost by 20 at Memphis in its opener, then beat New Orleans 120-119, lost to the Lakers 132-123 and lost to Memphis 110-105. Three of those four stayed inside 12.5.

The second Memphis game is the useful one. Jackson played 10 minutes and Markkanen six before both left, and Utah still finished within five behind 26 points from George and 17 points and 10 rebounds from Ace Bailey.

The projections side with the points. One public model has the Spurs by 9.4, a 123.3 to 113.9 game, and another has them by 10. Neither gets to 12.5. The bigger money is on Utah as well: 64% of the spread money on 53% of the bets, with the Jackson and Markkanen news already out. At -105, the implied probability is 51.2%.

San Antonio hasn't been as dominant as this price suggests, either. The Spurs lost to Oklahoma City and Houston before winning at Dallas by 16 and beating Sacramento by 27.

Size is where this can go wrong. Models can lag roster news, and without Jackson and possibly Markkanen, Utah has little to throw at Wembanyama. Another rout like the Sacramento game sinks this. The line has moved a point toward San Antonio since it opened, but that move came with the injury news, and we would still rather take 12.5 with Utah than lay it.

PICK #2: Keyonte George 20+ Points (-130)

Somebody has to take Utah's shots with Jackson out and Markkanen hurt, and George is the obvious candidate. He has scored 22, 19, 24 and 26 in 29 to 33 minutes this season, and the 26 came in the game Jackson and Markkanen left early.

Four games isn't much, but last season backs it up. He averaged 23.6 points and scored 20 or more in 34 of his 54 games, about 63%. At -130, the implied probability is 56.5%, below that rate, and two of Utah's top three scorers are out or limited tonight.

San Antonio's defense is the hurdle. Wembanyama changes shots at the rim, and the Spurs have long guards to throw at him. If Markkanen plays, George gets help and some of the shots go elsewhere. In a close game, though, he plays his full minutes and carries the scoring, and a close game is what we expect.

PICK #3: De'Aaron Fox Under 4.5 Rebounds (-158)

Fox is a point guard playing next to Wembanyama, and his rebounding shows it. He has 7, 4, 3 and 4 rebounds in 32, 34, 28 and 26 minutes, so he has stayed under 4.5 in three of four games. The only time he cleared it was the opener against Oklahoma City.

That's a four-game sample, so we checked last season too. Fox averaged 3.8 rebounds for San Antonio and finished with four or fewer in about two-thirds of his games. The Under at -158 implies 61.2%, which sits below that rate.

Wembanyama has pulled 13, 13, 7 and 10 rebounds, and Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper take their share off the wing. Fox pushes the ball after the stop. He is averaging nearly eight assists, and that is where his production shows up.

Utah's missing size cuts the other way. With fewer Jazz bigs crashing, more long rebounds can bounce to guards, and the Over is +120. He also played only 26 minutes against Sacramento, his fewest of the season, and no rest or minutes plan has been announced for the second night. We expect a normal night for him as the passer while Wembanyama cleans the glass.
