Houston comes to Fiserv Forum at 4-0, and it comes without either of its centers. Tipoff is 8:00 PM ET. Alperen Sengun is out with low back soreness, one game after he put up 29 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in 37 minutes against Atlanta. Steven Adams, the backup center, is out with a right soleus strain, and Marcus Smart is questionable with a left forearm strain. Houston has scored 120.8 points a game, sixth in the league, and allowed 111.

Milwaukee is 1-3 and picked up its first win in its last game, 110-102 over Indiana. Its defense has allowed 122.3 points a game, 25th of 30. The Bucks' entry is still missing from the league's latest injury report, but local coverage lists no Milwaukee injuries, and the same five have started every game: Myles Turner, Kyle Kuzma, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Tyler Herro and Ryan Rollins. Houston is -8.5 (-106), with the Rockets -345 on the moneyline and the Bucks +265.

The way we see it, Milwaukee gets the paint and the glass that Sengun and Adams usually own. Houston is expected to start Clint Capela, who has averaged 7.7 minutes in the games Adams missed, and to play Jabari Smith Jr. at center in small lineups. That leaves rebounds for Jaquez, inside points for backup center Kel'el Ware, and room for Kasparas Jakucionis to run the second unit against a short Houston bench. Each of our three picks needs exactly that game. Four games is a small sample, so we lean on minutes and role as much as on results.

Rockets vs. Bucks Predictions

  • Pick #1: Jaime Jaquez Jr. Over 5.5 Rebounds (-119)
  • Pick #2: Kasparas Jakucionis 6+ Points (-174)
  • Pick #3: Kel'el Ware Over 10.5 Points (-107)

PICK #1: Jaime Jaquez Jr. Over 5.5 Rebounds (-119)

Houston is missing the two players who would fight Jaquez for these boards. Sengun had 10, 7, 10 and 9 rebounds in the first four games, and Capela has barely played. When Houston goes small with Smith at center, the long rebounds fall to wings and forwards, and Jaquez crashes from the wing.

He has started all four games at forward and grabbed at least six in every one: 7 at Washington, 11 in a 132-125 home loss to Chicago, 8 in a 127-116 loss at Philadelphia and 6 against Indiana. That's 8.0 a game. Last season in Miami he averaged 5.0 and reached six in 29 of 75 games, so this is a new level, and it comes with a new job as a starting forward in Milwaukee. At -119, the implied chance is 54.3%.

He's played 31, 35, 27 and 25, down in each of the last two games, and his six against Indiana came in 25 minutes, one board over the line. The Under is -110.

PICK #2: Kasparas Jakucionis 6+ Points (-174)

This is the steepest price on the card. At -174 it implies 63.5%, so four games aren't enough on their own. Last season in Miami, Jakucionis scored six or more in 17 of the 21 games where he played at least 20 minutes, and 20-plus minutes is his role now. He's Milwaukee's sixth man, with 15, 7, 12 and 7 points in 26, 23, 25 and 21 minutes.

He runs the second unit behind Herro and Rollins, with 3, 5, 2 and 5 assists, and he doesn't need the three to get there: he's made one or none from deep in every game. Houston's bench is thinner with Adams out and Smart questionable, and Milwaukee's reserves should see a lot of Houston's backup lineups.

Two of his four games stopped at seven, one point over the number, and his 21 minutes against Indiana were his fewest. In his shorter outings last season, that rate dropped. If his minutes slip under 20, this gets thin.

PICK #3: Kel'el Ware Over 10.5 Points (-107)

Ware's scoring has followed his minutes. He played 14 and 15 in the first two games and scored 7 and 11. Then he played 29 minutes at Philadelphia (19 points, 13 rebounds) and 19 against Indiana (16 points, 14 rebounds). That's three of four over 10.5, including every game he played at least 15 minutes. At -107 the implied chance is 51.7%, and the Under is -119.

The matchup helps. Ware backs up Turner, and Houston will have Capela, Smith or a two-way big trying to keep him off the offensive glass. Local coverage called this a good test for him after his last two games.

His one miss came in 14 minutes, and a backup center's playing time swings with fouls and matchups. If Houston stays small and Milwaukee answers with smaller lineups, Ware could sit longer than he has lately.
