Detroit brings a 4-1 record into Barclays Center tonight for a 7:30 PM ET tip-off, and Brooklyn is still looking for its first win at 0-4. We think the Pistons win this with their defense and pull away in a modest-scoring game. Detroit covers, the total stays low, and a big lead keeps Daniss Jenkins and the second unit on the floor.

Detroit is -7.5 with the moneyline at -295 and Brooklyn at +240, and the total has dropped from 226.5 to 222.5 since books posted it. Jalen Duren (right hamstring strain) is out for Detroit and Isaiah Joe (right hip contusion) is questionable on the latest injury report. Egor Demin (right bone bruise) is out for Brooklyn. Starting lineups aren't posted yet. These teams have played five and four games, so every number below is a small sample.

Pistons vs. Nets Predictions

  • Pick #1: Pistons -7.5 (-110)
  • Pick #2: Under 222.5 (-110)
  • Pick #3: Daniss Jenkins Over 10.5 Points (-101)

PICK #1: Pistons -7.5 (-110)

All four Detroit wins have come by at least eight: 121-113 over Boston, 128-111 at Miami, 106-93 at Philadelphia and 97-89 over Charlotte. Eight is all this number asks for. The Pistons give up 103.4 points a game, second in the league, and nobody has scored more than 113 on them. Brooklyn gives up 124, which ranks 27th, though one of its four games went to overtime. The Nets are 0-2 at home after losing 110-103 to Charlotte and 136-109 to Indiana.

Last season Detroit beat Brooklyn by 18, 53 and 38 and lost the other meeting by two. We wouldn't lean hard on a different season, but the Nets have given us no reason yet to expect a closer matchup. The -110 price implies 52.4%.

This isn't a bargain. Detroit has 80% of the bets and 86% of the money, even though the line has come down from 8.5 to 7.5 since books posted it. Brooklyn also lost by only four at Cleveland and by one in overtime at Boston, where Demin left after 10 minutes. Michael Porter Jr. and Julius Randle have combined for 59, 51, 20 and 51 points. Detroit's offense has cooled without Duren, with 106, 97 and 97 in the three games he has missed, and that last 97 came against a Charlotte team that turned it over 25 times.

PICK #2: Under 222.5 (-110)

Detroit's three games without Duren totaled 199, 208 and 186. Two were wins and one was a 111-97 loss at New York, and the closest of them still landed 14.5 points short of this number. A 114-100 Detroit win covers the spread and finishes 8.5 under.

The market has moved our way. The total is down four points since books posted it, even with 72% of the bets and 74% of the money on the Over. Demin being ruled out may explain part of the drop. The Under also implies 52.4% at -110.

The record won't sell this one. The Under has won at 222.5 in 4 of the 9 games these teams have played, 3 of 5 for Detroit and 1 of 4 for Brooklyn. The Nets' games have totaled 213, 246, 245 and 249, and they score 114.3 a game, 14th in the league. Our case is that none of the four teams they've played allows as few points as Detroit, and that their two home games produced just 103 and 109 Brooklyn points. If Porter and Randle both get going, this loses.

PICK #3: Daniss Jenkins Over 10.5 Points (-101)

Jenkins comes off the bench, and that's the role we're betting on. His one start in five games was 18 points in 38 minutes at Philadelphia with Ausar Thompson out, and Thompson is projected to start tonight, so throw that game out. In his four bench games he has played 15, 22, 24 and 24 minutes and scored 3, 15, 11 and 14. That's 3 of 4 over this line, and the 11 cleared by half a point on 3-of-10 shooting.

Last season's Brooklyn games are why he fits this story. He had 18 points in 20 minutes of the 53-point win and 14 in 22 minutes of the 38-point win, plus 11 in 35 minutes of the two-point loss. His one miss was 3 points in five minutes of the 18-point win. When Detroit gets a big lead, the second unit plays.

He averaged 9.3 points last season and cleared 10.5 in 26 of 72 games, with minutes that swung from 2 to 45. In the 20 games he played 20 to 28 minutes, the range he's in now, he cleared it 9 times. The -101 price implies 50.2%, and the Under at -126 says the market leans against us.

Check Joe's status before you bet. With Joe playing 19 and 18 minutes, Jenkins scored 3 and 15. With Joe out, he scored 11 and 14. Kevin Huerter and Ronald Holland II have filled Joe's backup wing minutes, so a return should cost them first, but a few shots would go with him.
