Panthers vs. Eagles Prediction, NFL Week 6 Odds & Best Bets (10/18)

Tanner McKee gets the start for Philadelphia, and he hasn't taken a snap this season. Jalen Hurts went on injured reserve Saturday with a superficial blood clot in his calf. The backfield is thin as well. Saquon Barkley (hamstring) and Will Shipley (foot) are both out, so Dameon Pierce, who played 77% of the offensive snaps in last week's 19-17 loss to Jacksonville in London, leads a group that now includes Jaydon Blue, just promoted to the active roster.

The defense Bryce Young faces is banged up too. Defensive back Michael Carter II (abdomen) and edge Jalyx Hunt (knee) are out, cornerback Jakorian Bennett wasn't activated from injured reserve, and A.J. Epenesa (back) is doubtful. The Eagles allow 248.4 passing yards per game, 23rd in the league.

Carolina (2-2) comes off its Week 5 bye scoring 30.3 points per game, fourth in the NFL, and last played in a 32-26 win over Detroit on Oct. 4. Philadelphia (2-3) has dropped three straight. The line has flipped on the news. The Eagles were favored by nearly a touchdown in early lines; now Carolina is laying 3 and the total sits at 39.

We expect Young to get his yards against a short-handed secondary and Chuba Hubbard to finish drives on the ground. Both bets need Carolina's offense to move the ball, and neither needs a shootout.

Kickoff is 1:00 PM ET Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field on CBS. The National Weather Service has sun, mid-50s and a 5 mph wind.

PICK #1: Bryce Young Over 234.5 Passing Yards (-113)

Young has cleared this number in all four starts, and comfortably. He threw for 361 yards against Chicago, 287 at Atlanta, 291 at Cleveland and 329 against Detroit, so even his worst day beat the line by 52.5 yards.

Cleveland is the game that looks most like this one: on the road, a 41.5 total, a 21-18 loss. Young still put up 291 on 48 attempts. He has played at least 90% of the offensive snaps every week, and his top receivers are healthy. Tetairoa McMillan had 192 yards against Detroit before the bye, and Jalen Coker practiced in full all week.

The Eagles give up 248.4 passing yards a game and are now without Carter and Bennett. The -113 price works out to a 53.1% break-even. For a quarterback who hasn't been held under 287, that's a reasonable ask.

What could go wrong is an early Carolina lead against a backup quarterback, followed by a lot of handoffs to Hubbard and a short game.

PICK #2: Chuba Hubbard Anytime Touchdown (-110)

Even that scenario has Hubbard getting the ball. He has scored in three of four games and has five touchdowns: a rushing and a receiving score against Chicago, a receiving touchdown at Atlanta and two rushing scores against Detroit.

The workload keeps growing. He had 10 and 12 carries in the first two games, then 19 and 20 in the last two, playing 84% of the offensive snaps both times. AJ Dillon (ankle) is out. Trevor Etienne was activated Saturday and is questionable, but he hasn't played a snap this season, and Carolina brought Anthony Tyus III up from the practice squad as a third back.

Philadelphia allows 118.0 rushing yards per game, tied for 19th, and it's missing Hunt with Epenesa doubtful. The price of -110 implies 52.4%.

He was held out of the end zone at Cleveland, and Etienne could steal a carry or two near the goal line. He carried 39 times over the last two games, though, and that workload is why we'll take the touchdown at -110.
