The Knicks (2-3) visit the 76ers (4-1) at Xfinity Mobile Arena for a 7:30 PM ET tip on Prime Video, opening NBA Cup group play with a rematch of opening night. Philadelphia won that one 106-100 in New York, and the teams combined for 206. We expect another game in the low 220s or below, with New York's offense kept quiet by the defense that already handled it once. That's the case for both picks: Jalen Brunson under his combined line and the game under the total.

Jaylen Brown is the open question. He's questionable with left knee soreness on the latest injury report after starting all five games at 36.3 minutes a night, and if he sits, Philadelphia loses 20.6 points a game and a big wing on defense. Jose Alvarado (ankle) is out for New York.

Knicks vs. 76ers Predictions

  • Pick #1: Jalen Brunson Under 36.5 Points + Rebounds + Assists (-117)
  • Pick #2: Under 228.5 (-112)

PICK #1: Jalen Brunson Under 36.5 Points + Rebounds + Assists (-117)

This number is priced close to last season's Brunson, who averaged 26.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 6.8 assists. He's at 25.8, 2.4 and 5.0 through five games, so the scoring has held and the rest has dropped. His combined totals, newest first, are 46, 31, 35, 25 and 29, which is four of five under, and -117 implies a 53.9% chance.

Philadelphia allows 107.4 points a game, fifth-fewest in the league through five games, and it held him to 21 points on 6-of-19 shooting in the opener, 29 combined. He cleared this number twice in last season's four-game playoff sweep of the 76ers, but that team didn't have LeBron James or Jaylen Brown.

Five games is a short look, and he went under 36.5 in only 34 of 74 games last season, so this is a bet on the current version. The 46 came two nights ago in Chicago: 38 points, seven assists and six threes, with Tyler Kolek sharing the backcourt and moving him off the ball. If coach Mike Brown stays with that look, or Jaylen Brown sits, Brunson could find cleaner shots.

PICK #2: Under 228.5 (-112)

These teams have stayed under this number in almost everything they've played. The Knicks' totals are 260, 208, 213, 210 and 206, and the 76ers' are 223, 199, 243, 220 and 206, so each is 4 of 5 with the opener in both lists. New York scores 109.8 a game and Philadelphia 110.8. One public projection has 225.3, and a 114-108 game would still cash. At -112 the Under implies 52.8%.

Books posted the total at 230.5 and it has fallen to 228.5, with 75% of the bets and 82% of the money on the Under. That makes this a popular ticket with two points already gone.

The Knicks and Bulls combined for 260 two nights ago and the 76ers' win over Milwaukee reached 243, so five games each can swing on one shootout. Jaylen Brown's absence would take scoring away from Philadelphia, but a thinner rotation could also loosen its defense. Joel Embiid and James aren't on the injury report for this first night of a back-to-back, with Charlotte waiting the next night.
