Philadelphia shows up at Capital One Arena with the worst offense in the league, on the second night of a back-to-back. Puck drop is 7:30 PM ET on TNT and truTV. The Flyers are 3-7-4 with 27 goals in 14 games, 1.93 a game, last of 32 teams. The night before, they fell behind Columbus 3-0 in the first period, tied it late in the third with the goalie pulled and lost 4-3 in overtime at home.

Washington is 6-4-0, 5-2-0 at home, and has played once in the last seven days: a 4-3 overtime win over Buffalo in which Alex Tuch and Dylan Strome scored two goals each. The Capitals average 3.4 goals a game, 11th in the league.

We think Philadelphia stays stuck. The Flyers haven't been scoring, tired legs won't help, and that keeps the game low while giving Washington room to win by two. Something like 4-1 or 3-1 cashes both picks.

Goaltender Logan Thompson missed the Buffalo game with a lower-body injury, has practiced fully twice since and is listed as probable on the league's status report, but Washington says it will set the plan for him on game day. Philadelphia is projected to start Joseph Woll after Dan Vladar played against Columbus. Neither start is confirmed. The Capitals are -232 on the moneyline and the total is 6.5.

Flyers vs. Capitals Predictions

  • Pick #1: Capitals -1.5 (+108)
  • Pick #2: Under 6.5 Goals (-125)

PICK #1: Capitals -1.5 (+108)

If the Flyers score one or two, a Washington team scoring 3.4 a game has a clear path to a two-goal win. The Capitals have won by two or more in four of their six wins: 5-2 at Carolina, 5-3 over Pittsburgh, 3-1 over the Rangers and 4-2 over New Jersey.

The schedule helps too. Washington has had a week of practice and one game. Philadelphia is playing its seventh game in 15 nights, coming off an overtime game, and it's without Travis Konecny and Owen Tippett. The Flyers did take over the last two periods against Columbus, outshooting the Blue Jackets 28-6, and still needed an extra attacker to get their third goal. They're 3-1-1 since an 0-6-3 start, and the goals still haven't come.

The +108 price implies a 48.1% chance. The bigger bets are on Washington too: 56% of the money on the Capitals' puck line comes from 39% of the bets.

Philadelphia's best argument is that it keeps games close. Eight of its 14 games have been decided by one goal, and only four of its 11 losses came by two or more. An overtime game can't cover, and sometimes the second goal depends on an empty net late. Washington also plays in Nashville the next night, and the goalie plan isn't set. If Charlie Lindgren starts instead of Thompson, Washington's net gets weaker; Lindgren is 2-1-0 with an .886 save percentage. We'll still take the rested team against the one that can't score.

PICK #2: Under 6.5 Goals (-125)

Eleven of Philadelphia's 14 games have stayed under 6.5 goals. The three that didn't were a 7-0 loss to Pittsburgh, a 5-4 loss to Anaheim and the 4-3 overtime loss to Columbus. The Flyers have scored more than three goals once all season.

It's the game we described up top. A 4-1 or 3-1 Washington win stays well under, and even a 4-2 win lands on six.

At -125, the implied probability is 55.6%, and the danger sits on Washington's end. Six of the Capitals' 10 games have reached seven goals, and their team save percentage is .887. A bad night in goal for either team could push this over by itself, and overtime goals count toward the total. Woll has a .904 save percentage for Philadelphia and Thompson is at .901. If Philadelphia keeps scoring the way it has, the Under holds.
