Monday night's game changed shape in the fourth quarter of Chicago's Week 2 loss to Minnesota, when Caleb Williams hurt his hamstring. ESPN reported a Grade 2 strain, the kind that usually costs three to four weeks, and the Bears ruled him out Saturday. The team says Tyson Bagent or Case Keenum will start. Bagent has cleared the concussion protocol, and Sunday's reports expected Keenum to get the job. Either way, a backup gets a Philadelphia defense allowing 173.5 passing yards per game, fifth fewest in the league through two weeks.

The line has swung five points. Chicago was a 1.5-point favorite on the look-ahead line, and Philadelphia opened around -4 to -4.5 once Williams got hurt. The consensus now sits at Eagles -3.5 (-113), with the Philadelphia moneyline at -206. The total has dropped from 46.5 on the look-ahead, and 43.5 at the Week 3 open, to 41.5 (-110). Sixty-six percent of the money on the total is on the Under, against 54% of the bets.

Philadelphia is 2-0 and hasn't covered either game: 24-22 over Washington, then 24-20 at Tennessee. Chicago won 59-37 at Carolina, then lost 9-3 at home to Minnesota. The Eagles are without tight end Dallas Goedert (knee), receiver Hollywood Brown (ankle) and tackle Fred Johnson (knee). DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and Saquon Barkley (stinger) carry no game designation, and edge rusher Jonathan Greenard (pectoral) is questionable.

Kickoff is 8:15 PM ET at Soldier Field on ESPN and ABC. Expect about 64 degrees and dry at kickoff, with a light northeast wind.

Eagles vs. Bears Predictions

  • Pick #1: Dontayvion Wicks Over 40.5 Receiving Yards (-112)
  • Pick #2: Kyle Monangai Over 38.5 Rushing Yards (-112)
  • Pick #3: Eagles -3.5 (-113)

PICK #1: Dontayvion Wicks Over 40.5 Receiving Yards (-112)

Wicks keeps doing a lot with a little. Two catches on four targets went for 73 yards against Washington, and five of six went for 74 at Tennessee. He's being used deep, with 79 air yards in Week 1 and 69 in Week 2, so four or six targets have been enough to clear 70 both times. The injuries around him don't touch his job.

Tennessee is the best preview of Monday. Goedert played just 19 snaps there, and Brown played 17 without being targeted. Among the receivers and Johnny Mundt, Smith drew 13 targets, Wicks six, Mundt and Darius Cooper three each, and Makai Lemon one. The depth chart has Wicks starting at his spot with Cooper behind him and Brown backing up Smith, so losing Brown opens rotation snaps, not a starting job. Chicago's pass defense isn't much of an obstacle either, allowing 252 yards per game, 24th in the league through two weeks. At -112 you're paying for a 52.8% chance, and we'll take that.

Two games is still a thin record, and Week 1 came on two catches, so one overthrown ball changes the result. His snaps also dropped from 91% to 62% in Week 2 while Cooper's climbed to 41%. Smith is over his hamstring scare after 13 targets at Tennessee, and a favorite playing against a backup quarterback may just hand it to Barkley once it's ahead. This one pairs well with the spread, though. If Philadelphia hits Wicks deep a couple of times, that's how a four-point margin gets built.

PICK #2: Kyle Monangai Over 38.5 Rushing Yards (-112)

Chicago's backfield split hasn't moved. Monangai, the listed backup behind D'Andre Swift, has exactly 10 carries in each game and has cleared 38.5 both times: 100 yards at Carolina, then 47 against Minnesota on a day the Bears scored three points. Swift has the lead role (18 and 16 carries), and Monangai has played 43% and 34% of the snaps.

The knee isn't a worry. He was listed as not practicing Thursday, went full on Friday and Saturday, and has no designation. The matchup matters more. Philadelphia gives up 127 rushing yards per game, 23rd in the league, while its pass defense ranks fifth. Whichever backup plays quarterback, handing the ball to the backs is the sensible plan. The -112 price implies a 52.8% chance.

There are holes in it. The 100-yard game was a 59-37 shootout, and the 47 on 10 carries cleared this number by only 8.5 yards. Williams took almost every snap in both games and ran 10 and 5 times himself, so nobody knows yet how Chicago splits carries without him. A backup-led offense could stall more often, which means fewer drives and fewer carries to share. Officially, the starter is still Bagent or Keenum. And as a 3.5-point underdog, Chicago could fall behind and start throwing. This pick doesn't need the Bears to keep up, though. They lost 9-3 to Minnesota, and Monangai still ran 10 times for 47 yards.

PICK #3: Eagles -3.5 (-113)

The -113 price implies 53.1%, and the case is simple. Chicago's offense stalled against Minnesota even before Williams got hurt, and with him on the field for most of that game the Bears scored three points. Bagent went five of nine for 54 yards in relief. Now he or Keenum, neither of whom has started this season, faces a pass defense allowing 173.5 yards per game, fifth fewest in the league. The Eagles need to win by four.

The market already knows most of this. Chicago was a 1.5-point favorite on the look-ahead line, and the consensus as of 7:42 AM ET is Eagles -3.5 (-113). That five-point swing prices in Williams's absence, so we're not arguing the number is off. We're betting Chicago can't keep this within a field goal with a backup under center.

A three-point Eagles win loses, and some books are already at -4 or -4.5. Philadelphia hasn't covered as a favorite yet, winning by two against Washington and by four at Tennessee. Its offense scores 24 points per game (tied for 13th) and its defense allows 21 (12th), which is solid, not dominant. Spread bettors are split almost evenly, with 49% of the bets and 48% of the money on the Eagles. We passed on the Bears' receiving Unders because they ride on the same things as the first two picks: how the Eagles' targets split, and a Chicago game plan built on the run. The Under 41.5 (-110) leans on the same quarterback news as the spread, so play one or the other, not both.
