Odds as of Oct 18, 7:40 AM ET

The Chargers walk into Arrowhead Stadium 0-5, and the Chiefs are 4-0 and coming off their bye. Los Angeles has lost every game by at least six points, most recently 23-17 at home to Denver, and it scores 16.8 points per game, 30th in the league. Kansas City has won all four behind Kenneth Walker III, who has 537 rushing yards in those games. The market has turned hard on the Chargers: Kansas City opened as a 2.5-point favorite and now lays 7.5, while the total has slid from 46.5 to 41.5.

The injury report is a big part of that. Los Angeles is without its leading receiver, Tre' Harris, plus right tackle Joe Alt, left guard Kayode Awosika, cornerback Donte Jackson and safety Derwin James, and left tackle Rashawn Slater and center Tyler Biadasz are on injured reserve. Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston do return after missing the Denver game. Kansas City is without wide receiver Rashee Rice and tackle Josh Simmons, though Simmons hasn't played a snap this season and Rice played 10% of the snaps in Week 4. Justin Herbert and Patrick Mahomes are expected to start; neither carries a game status.

We expect a low-scoring game that Kansas City controls on the ground while Herbert, behind a makeshift line, hands the ball back. Kickoff is Sunday at 4:25 PM ET on CBS, and the forecast is sunny and dry, mid-60s with a light south wind.

Chargers vs. Chiefs Predictions

  • Pick #1: Under 41.5 (-112)
  • Pick #2: Kenneth Walker III Over 90.5 Rushing Yards (-113)
  • Pick #3: Justin Herbert Over 0.5 Interceptions (-153)

PICK #1: Under 41.5 (-112)

Four of the Chargers' five games have landed on exactly 40 total points. The other was a 30-23 loss at Seattle. Los Angeles has scored more than 17 points once all season, and it now plays without Harris and without Alt, Awosika, Slater and Biadasz up front.

Kansas City doesn't need a shootout to win this one. The Chiefs allow 19.25 points per game, seventh-fewest in the league, and once they're ahead they can lean on Walker and drain the clock. Six of the nine games these teams have played this season stayed under 41.5. The total has fallen five points since it opened, through 44, and 75% of the money sits on the Under from 69% of the bets. A -112 price works out to a 52.8% break-even.

What could go wrong is the Chiefs' offense. Kansas City scores 29.5 points per game, fifth in the league, and two of its four games blew past this number: 33-30 in overtime against Indianapolis and 30-27 at Las Vegas. Los Angeles allows 25.8 per game, and McConkey and Johnston give Herbert more to work with than he had against Denver. Last season's two meetings split, one under this total (29 points) and one over (48).

PICK #2: Kenneth Walker III Over 90.5 Rushing Yards (-113)

Walker has gone for 173, 117, 70 and 177 rushing yards on 87 carries. That's three of four games over this line, roughly 134 a week, and he has had at least 18 carries in every game this season.

The Chargers haven't stopped the run. They give up 118.6 rushing yards per game, four of their five opponents ran for more than 100, and those opponents averaged nearly 32 carries a game against them. Linebacker Daiyan Henley and defensive linemen Dalvin Tomlinson, Jamaree Caldwell and Bud Dupree are all questionable, so the front could be even thinner. At -113, the bet needs to win 53.1% of the time.

His one miss came at Miami, where Mahomes went 20 of 24 and Walker finished with 70 yards on 18 carries. A pass-first plan would cost this bet, but we don't expect Kansas City to need one against an offense that struggles to score. A Chiefs team running with a lead also keeps the Under alive.

PICK #3: Justin Herbert Over 0.5 Interceptions (-153)

Herbert has thrown at least one interception in every game: one against Arizona, two against Las Vegas, one at Buffalo, two at Seattle and one against Denver. That's seven on 143 attempts, a rate near 5%, and the Chargers lead the league with 13 giveaways. He has been sacked 17 times, second-most in the league, and Sunday's line is the same patchwork he played behind against Denver.

Kansas City's defense has picked off at least one pass in each of its four games, and its own offense has turned it over only twice. If the Chiefs get ahead, Herbert has to throw his way back, and every extra dropback is another chance for a mistake.

This one costs the most. At -153 the implied probability is 60.5%, and five games is a short record. The Chiefs also haven't sacked a quarterback since Week 1, so Herbert may get clean pockets, and McConkey and Johnston give him two familiar targets again. Still, a quarterback throwing picks at this rate, against a defense that has intercepted someone every week, should throw one here more often than not.
